Did You Know This About The Female Brain?

Admit it, ladies. You’ve always known you were superheroes. The only difference is, now you may be able to back it up with scientific evidence. Over the years, studies have shown that there are some brain differences between men and women, and not just structurally, but also in the way they act and think. The conclusion of the most recent study is that women may actually have more active brains than men. How’s that for a comeback the next time your spouse says you talk too much or have too much stress?

Studies of an Active Brain

A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, done on over 40,000 brain images of over 20,000 participants, discovered that women were more active than men in many areas of the brain. Most notably, women had more blood flow in areas like the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system.

Possibilities In Brain Power

Why does this matter? Well, the prefrontal cortex is generally associated with self-control and concentration, while the limbic system is the emotional center of the brain. It’s been found in the past that women are more prone to anxiety and depression than men, while men are diagnosed with conditions like ADHD and more likely to go to jail for behavioral disorders. The findings in the study could certainly account for these differences.

So it looks like if you’re a part of the sisterhood, your brain could predispose you to better focus, empathy, and intuition. On the other hand, it could also help in explaining the higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease in women. However, researchers need more evidence to determine what connections there may be between the two.

Until then, feel free to pull on your Supergirl cape and slap on your Wonder Woman cuffs. That is, if you hadn’t already figured out you were tough enough to go out and save the world with your magnificent brain.
