At a seminar recently, the speaker confessed to the audience his personal indulgence. It wasn't shoes (he was a HE after all!), it wasn't chocolate, it wasn't expensive scotch or cigars, it was books. Books of all sizes, covers, topics and purpose. He said his wife told him, "No more!", or they'd have to buy a bigger house. His minimum order of two new books a week is now sent to his office. I can...

Big "ah-ha" moments are wonderful gifts. Mine ususally come while running, practicing yoga or taking a shower. I've heard this happens to a lot of people because these kinds activities can take on a meditative quality. The monkey mind shuts off, maybe only for a moment, but in that moment we can actually listen for a change! Voila ~ the "ah-ha" is born! This particular "ah-ha" occured during a yoga...

What does it mean to be fit? Years ago when I was in graduate school, we were asked to come up with a working definition of fitness. Our ragedy band of future exercise professionals determined that being fit is "having the capacity to do all required and desired activities without undue stress or risk of injury". I don't think that the American College of Sports Medicine has adopted our definition...

It's exciting to see so many blogs on the importance of eating more (lots more!) fruits and vegetables. It has been a huge blind spot in my industry (fitness) for years and in other fields as well. As I educate about the difference between eating whole foods/adding a whole food supplements and the more familiar isolated vitamin supplements, the question that almost always comes up is: "What about calcium?"...

Are you challenged to find the time to exercise? Who isn't these days! But if a strong, lean, healthy body is valuable to you, then exercise is a must. Most days I don't have much more than 30 to 40 minutes that I can spare for my exercise, sometimes less, and I want the time I spend to bring results. The secret to twice the results in half the time is grounded intention. When I had a private personal...

Silly question. Of course you are! But not intentionally of course - it's all because of your food programming. Convenient or not, our brains and every other cell in our body are programmed just like a computer. Taste buds are a great example. Did you know that it takes about 10 contacts with a new taste before the brain registers the new taste as pleasurable? 10 contacts! That's a lot of "YUCKs!"...

Today's blog topic is food fundamentals. In spite of the millions of published pages on the subject, it really does come down to Michael Pollan's brilliant summation in his NY Times Sunday Magazine article titled Unhappy Meals: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." If your goal is to lose weight, increase your energy levels, think more clearly, improve your skin, alkalize your blood, detoxify, or...

Sequencing refers to the logical progression of actions that lead to a desired result. If you stop and think about it, just about everything we do is "sequenced." Children begin with the A-B-C's and 1-2-3's not Beowulf and Algebra. Cooking with or without a recipe is another example of sequencing. If you tried to saute carrots before you washed, peeled and sliced them, your dinner might not be too...
