When my husband got the diagnosis that he had a cancerous growth in his colon our world came to an end. We went from a routine colonoscopy to a future that was uncertain and filled with a lot of confusion and apprehension. It was during our quest to find the best surgeon to remove the tumor that Dr. David Rivadeneira was refereed to us. He was refereed to us by one of the top surgeons affiliated with New York-Presbyterian Hospital who told us that Dr. Rivadeneira is one of the best doctors on Long island that does the type of surgery my husband needed. From the moment we meet him he made us feel at ease and answered all of our questions and concerns. We had no doubts about having him do the surgery. Dr. Rivadeneira was successful in removing the entire cancerous growth and surrounding lymph nodes. Thanks to him, my husband in now cancer free!

I had been battling diverticulitis for years and all its symptoms back to 2013 including a couple of hospital stays. Unfortunately in January of 2015 I experienced a “Gastrointestinal Perforation” of my large intestine which required emergency services and immediate hospital surgical decisions. Although I was fortunate that the perforation sealed itself, the hospital’s triage surgeons recommended an immediate “Colostomy” as the only and best course of action. At the same time I was given this disheartening news, my Gastroenterologist Dr. Mejdi Ahmad introduced me to Colon & Rectal Surgeon - Dr. David Rivadeneira.
Dr. Rivadeneira immediately recommended an option which required the insertion of a “mid-line” in my arm to enable me to perform 3 weeks of home IV antibiotic treatments to minimize the infection in my large intestine due to diverticulitis. I was able to go to work and perform my daily responsibilities throughout this 3 week period, come home and administer the necessary antibiotics as trained by the Home IV Therapy service organization.
Dr. Rivadeneira assured me that by scheduling surgery after 3 weeks of IV treatment, that he should be able to perform a “Sigmoid Colectomy” – for those who don’t know, this is a partial removal of the large intestine with immediate reattachment thusly negating the need for a colostomy bag – thank you Dr. Rivadeneira!
His bedside manner while in the hospital was second to none – I have never had a Dr. treat me with such respect, concern and clarity from initial discussion to post surgery care.
Although I’m still recovering and the initial 3-4 weeks was difficult and painful at times….everything about the procedures, risks and recovery were clearly and accurately communicated to me by Dr. David Rivadeneira. He has also advised me that my chance of a diverticulitis related issue in the future is now less than 5%.
I feel very fortunate that I was introduced to Dr. David Rivadeneira!

Of all the specialists I have utilized over the past 10 years, Dr. Rivadeneira ranks as the best. I suffered with hemorrhoids for 3 years which actually became life altering – always worried about bleeding if I stood or walked too long.
I read many articles and blogs on the internet and advertisements for snake oil potions claiming to completely rid you of hemorrhoids in two days. Nothing worked. Like everyone else, I was dreading the thought and the embarrassment of seeing a specialist and the possibility of a hemorrhoidectomy. However, after a 5 minute banding procedure in Dr. Rivadeneira’s office, 3 years of suffering was over.
Dr. Rivadeneira never makes you feel rushed – puts you at ease – and is thorough in explaining any questions or concerns you might have.
I know there is a lot of angst having to deal with such a problem, so you avoid seeing a doctor, wasting time and money as you seek out all sorts of nonsense remedies. I know – because I have been there. The banding procedure performed in his office was virtually a non-event. I am sorry I did not contact Dr. Rivadeneira 3 years ago.

Dr Rivadeneira put me at ease during our first consultation. He completely explained my condition and the surgical procedure necessary to correct my problem. In addition, he outlined all of the possible issues after surgery, percentage for reoccurrence the expected recovery time. I had complete trust and faith in Dr Rivadeneira's ability as a surgeon to perform my Colin resection.

Excellent Doctor

Back in April of 2014, I visited Dr. David Rivadeneira for the first time where he correctly diagnosed me with an anal fissure. A few weeks earlier I saw my primary doctor and he misdiagnosed me as having a thrombosed hemorrhoid. Upon meeting Dr. Rivadeneira, I was amazed at how kind and compassionate he was. He didn’t treat me as just another patient, but I truly felt as if he was treating and talking to me as one of his family members or friends. Immediately upon examining me he correctly diagnosed me as having an anal fissure. He prescribed me a cream to try for three weeks. When I came back after three weeks there wasn’t much improvement. He told me to try for another three weeks and if there wasn’t any significant improvement I should have LIS (Lateral internal sphincterotomy) performed. When I heard the word surgery, I completely got scared, especially this type of surgery and its location. What made it worse was reading all the negative stories on the internet about the surgery and possible side effects. When I went back after another three weeks there was still little improvement and at this time he recommended that I go through with the surgery. Through my stubbornness and fear of the surgery I tried for an additional three months to try to heal myself hoping that it would get better. That was a bad idea. I got to a point where I had gotten really bad, I lost about 30 pounds and in addition to the anal fissure a growth appeared in the area. I went back to Dr. Rivadeneira in September and as soon as he saw the growth he told me that it doesn’t look good and there is a possibility that the growth could be cancer and that I should have surgery immediately. When I heard this my heart dropped, but I realized that surgery was no longer an option, but an absolute necessity. In the end I had LIS and a fissurectomy. The surgery only lasted forty minutes and in a few hours I was already laying on my couch. I feared for the worst after surgery that I would be in great pain, especially after my first bowel movement. To my amazement I had absolutely zero pain after my surgery. I repeat zero pain. I myself was in shock that I experienced no pain and I never had to take any pain relieving medication that was prescribed to me post surgery. The biopsy on my growth ended up being Squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Dr. Rivadeneira told me that if I waited a month or more it definitely would have developed into cancer. I cannot express in words how thankful I am to Dr. Rivadeneira for his professionalism, compassion, surgical skills and how lucky I feel that I found such a wonderful physician and surgeon. Long Island is truly blessed to have such a knowledgeable, professional and compassionate doctor.

Dr. Rivadeneira is not only a highly skilled surgeon, he is personable and masterful at explaining the process to his patients. His friendly, open and optimistic attitude instills confidence. He takes as much time as is needed with his patients to discuss options and to explain how recovery will unfold . He follows up in the days after surgery to insure that all is well. His staff is equally skilled at taking care of his patients. I would recommend Dr. Rivadeneira to family and friends. His skill alleviated the terrible pain I was feeling from an anal fissure and his compassion confirmed my opinion that I choose the right surgeon.

I have been struggling with Diverticulitis for 10 years, with it becoming progressively worse each year. Always concerned of what I was eating and the effect it would have on my Diverticulitis had taken control of my life. Quality of life was diminishing and the pain from Diverticulitis was increasing. Each time an attack took place it was always the same, horrible pain followed by those strong antibiotics which in themselves made you sick. Diverticulitis was becoming my life. In March of 2014 then again in May of 2014 I was hit with 2 very hard attacks now the count is up over 13 attacks in 10 years. To make matters worse the symptoms were not going away when treated with medications. I had moved into the phase called “Smoldering Diverticulitis” – meaning the medicine had little effect on the infection. The time had come to make a decision and have this corrected. With encouragement from my physician it was time to find a surgeon who could help me to find health again. I was provided with 3 surgeon’s names and suggested I meet with each to determine which was best for me. I tried to defer to my physician to make the choice but was told “No it’s your call you have to feel good about this, it’s serious”. With those words firmly implanted in my mind I set up appointments with 3 surgeons, all on the same day.
Doctor Rivadeneira was the first appointment that day and the only one. From the time he first walked into the examining room, to sitting and discussing the details of the surgery in his office some things quickly became very clear.
Doctor Rivadeneira is a deeply caring man with a deep respect for his patients and their unique needs. His knowledge is second to none and he relates to you in a fashion that you can understand, The mystery is gone along with the fear. He laid out in detail the steps of the surgery, potential possibilities and how they would be addressed. We discussed recovery and what life would be like post-surgery.
What was a difficult decision was made easy – I had found the person I wanted to handle my surgery and even more important my healing.
I had my surgery Oct 9th – a date which will always stand out in my mind for two reasons. 1. It was the first day in my life beyond Diverticulitis and enjoying a healthy life. 2 it was the day that a very nervous patient laid on a table in a surgery suite and a caring Doctor came over and held his hand and said not to worry it was all going to be fine. That was Doctor Rivadeneira and it has all been fine!
The message to my experience:
1. I highly recommend Doctor Rivadeneira and have done so to people already.
2. Do not wait 11 years to deal with Diverticulitis.
3. Doctor Rivadeneira team is the Very Best.
