Many women turn to alternative medicine as a way of treating their menopausal symptoms. Hot flashes are common in women going through menopause, as well as following breast cancer treatment. A few years ago, studies were published that indicated that flaxseed, which is plant-based and contains estrogen-like compounds called phytoestrogens, may not be as helpful as once thought for reducing hot flashes. According to a study done by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, groups of women given flaxseed on a daily basis showed no significantly improvement in hot flashes as compared to a control group of women given placebo bars.
