According to a recent study in the American Journal of Pediatrics , mother's with young children (specifically new mother's with babies) were found to be exercising less and significantly increasing their caloric (and sugar!) intake compared to women without children. In fact, new mother's were found to be exercising on the average an hour less of moderate physical activity per week than child-less women. These new mothers were also found to be consuming about 2300 calories, whereas women of the same age without children studied were found to be consuming about 1900. These mother's with very young children were also found to be significantly increasing their consumption of sugar and saturated fats.
This isn't exactly a shocking revelation. Even those without children can understand the significant change in lifestyle that accompanies having your first child. There are many factors-stress, constant worrying, round the clock feeding hours-that could contribute to a change in existing exercising and eating habits. The important thing to remember is that you need to take time to fit in healthy eating habits and exercising with the wacky new schedule your baby has introduced. Whether it's going for long walks with the stroller, keeping healthy snacks on the ready for late-night feedings, or remembering to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day- once you commit to remembering to put your own health-needs a priority as well, it will become second nature.
