Last week, New York Times published an article titled 'Cows on Drugs'. This article was written by David Kennedy who used to be the Commissionaire of Food and Drug Administration. He speaks of his experience as the commisionare 30 years ago and how even back then cows where being injected by antibiotics and hormones to make them fatter.
He talks about how it was clear to scientists that penicillin and two other antibiotics were harmful not only to the animals but also the consumers. Scientists and agribusiness men persuaded Congress not to approve the regulation of these drugs, even with clear scientific evidence, were denied. The American Meat Institute, pharmocuetical companies and their lobbyists in Washington blocked the proposal.
Did you know that 90,000 people die from bacterial infections and 70 percent of those infections are caused by bacteria that are resistant to at least one powerful antibiotic. Did you know that the anti-bacteria that is injected into cows that we consume makes us resistant to these deadly bacteria among other negative health effects? There is a lot of money and politics involved in these decisions that is the reason YOU should educate yourself on alternative choices and make the best of it.
