Spiritual development in a child, and what parents must know.

What are the solutions to evils of xenophobia?

There are 10 solutions. We start one by one in the order of importance.

1. RE-EDUCATING THE PARENTS (PROPER PARENTING)

Proper parenting is the most responsible act and involves complex issues. Therefore, we have to discuss proper parenting first and what it means.

Proper parenting is the process of raising and educating a child from birth, or before, until adulthood. Raising a child properly means giving the proper education to the child. As mentioned before, the earlier it starts the better it is for the child (the future adult). The first and foremost educators in child's life are the parents. Therefore, it is of immense importance that parents have the proper education themselves first.

The goals of human parenting are usually to provide for children's emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs, protect them from harm, and impart in them skills and cultural values until they reach legal adulthood, usually after adolescence.

Therefore, one of the most important responsibility of parenting is to secure child's development emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

Emotional development refers to the conditions in which a child's mind can develop securely and peacefully. If the child's dignity is safe, i.e. nobody encroaches upon a child physically or verbally, he/she is able to develop with emotional security.

We discussed ten golden rules in child's proper emotional development, ten golden rules in child's proper intellectual and ten golden rules in child's spiritual development; that parents have to bear in mind all the time.

Now we continue with What parents must know about spiritual development in a child.

WHAT PARENTS MUST KNOW

Our main fear in life is based upon the wrong education we learned during our formative years of life. As mentioned earlier, these were always our teachers who told us to fear something imaginary, for example, God or Devil or some ghost. These mythological characters only exist in our mind because we were taught wrongly in our childhood that they do exist in the outside world. In reality they do exist in the outside world but only in the deluded belief systems. We must let go of all the fears from these creatures. They are nuisance and source of constant worry. As mentioned before "True God" lives in our heart, not outside. And you never have to fear "True God".

If you begin to understand spirituality as explained above, in the form of a personal model, you are bound to develop a powerful force within yourself which will guide you to love and be compassionate to your fellow being.

You will find "The Eternal Peace" in your heart after you achieve this gift of spirituality (i.e. Love, compassion, hope, optimism, contentment and happiness). This Eternal Peace will compel you to share your gift with your children, your loved ones, friends and everyone in the in the world."

One frequently asked question by the parents is,

"Should children be expected to learn about the birth religion of the parents?"

The answer is yes. Not only they should learn about the birth religion of the parents but also the learning should be encouraged regarding all the traditional religions. In this way, the child gets a unique opportunity to know about all the religions in general. Once the child has acquired the knowledge of all the important religions, it should be the decision of the child when he/she reaches the age of maturity (18 and over) to decide what belief he/she needs to follow. Even if one does not chose to follow any religion, there should be no objection to one's decision to be a non believer in any traditional religions. As mentioned before, spirituality does not mean that it only belongs to a religious doctrine. Even many atheist are (and have been) highly spiritual people.

One must understand that there is an element of "Child Abuse" in religious teachings. Therefore, one must know how to avoid it.

The essential part of freedom is that religion must never be indoctrinated in the child's mind by force. That is the worst form of child abuse. Unfortunately there is no law against this most damaging and devastating form of child abuse. According to # 9 Golden Rule of Spiritual Health, freedom of choice is also the right of the child. If the child is forced to follow the religion of birth (of the parents), the child will be spiritually doomed to be trapped in the outside supernatural forces and will never acquire the most powerful force of his/her own inner self.

However, the most important evil to avoid (when teaching about the birth religion) is the evil of religionism. Religionism means;

A. Children must never be told that their birth religion is better than any other traditional religion.

B. Neither should they be told verbally or otherwise that other religions are lesser in spirituality than their birth religion.

C. And under no circumstances other religions be degraded and humiliated in the growing mind of the child. This evil of religionism creates bigots and xenophobes.

All A, B and C mentioned above are the evils of religionism. They create bigots and xenophobes. If children are allowed to be bigots and xenophobes, they will never become spiritual in the true sense of the word.

Next we shall continue with the second solution to xenophobia i.e. Re-educating the Public Schools.

Hi Jeff, You are right; Parents are the first one who put this fear. I have said the same in the context of teachers. Since this article belongs to parents, therefore the context is parents. Parents are the first teachers in a child’s life. It is not true what you said that all religions teach morality that reflects the uniqueness and superiority of their religion over others’ religions. Nancy said the same thing. In reality it is not religion but the religionists (prophets, or religious interpreters) who undermine the validity of others religions. A true religion must never condemn the preaching of other religions; neither should it glorify its own religion in a way that devalues other religions. Such approach promulgates the fundamental evil of religionism, which is a contradiction to the spirit of true religion. In other words, it is the religionist (not religion) who demonstrates such lacunae (holes and gaps) in the preaching of his religion. Religionist is the one who by promoting evil of religionism ultimately degrades his own religion. He should be appropriately reminded of his faults and even reprimanded for this. My article criticizes such attitude of all religionists. I understand that religionists have their own monopoly on casting the first stone while none of these religionists can claim that they are free from any misgivings (sin). It is not the religion that should be blamed for the ills of the hidden sentiment (greed) of the religionists that gives wrong meaning to religion. These religionists can be religious leaders, preachers, prophets or those religious scholars who claim to understand religion. Historically speaking, it is the religionists who by demeaning other religions have given bad name to religion. I am trying to bring out a universal conscious among my readers that installs in them the spirit of free thinking without any adulteration from religionism. A free thinking mind has the ability to mould its thoughts according to need of time. The new morality of modern time cannot be dictated by xenophobe religionism. Religionism will only lead to xenophobia and eventually to World War III; and that will lead to the extinction of human specie from this planet. Your assertion that all religions are not based on love and respect for humanity is not true either. Religion simply means having a source of higher spiritual attainment. The destination of path to spirituality lies in the love and respect for the fellow being. If a religion preaches hate and disrespect for fellow being, it is not a religion. Religionists from all religions are the sole cause of misinterpreting true spirit of religion. I call them religionists because they practice religionism, not religion. They all have a selfish agenda of their own to exploit the masses in the name of religion. You said, “…. EVERY RELIGION HAS CREATED DIFFERINT KINDS OF GODS AS DIFFERENT AS THEIR CREATORS ARE...” Again, it is not the religion but the religionists who have demoralized the true spirit of religion by creating dummy gods. True God does not create schism (division) among humans by telling them to build their own worshipping places and then fight and kill humans for the survival of their dummy gods. Besides, true God lives within your own heart. You don’t need to find the true God by falling in the traps of religionists, who like the spiders, build spider webs (mosques, temples, synagogues etc) to trap their prey. These worship places are devices designed by religionists to prey upon naive and ignorant people and to extract money from them. What I am preaching is also a religion. In my religion I use the term “True God” in a philosophical sense (which God really is) and should never be personified. Religionists, on the other hand, by personifying God, make their god look like a super “human” dummy (not God). I know it is not easy to understand the true concept of this philosophy. I hope it clarifies some of your confusion about religion, religionism and religionists. Sydshahid syedshahismd@yahoo.com.au

DR SHAHID, I LIKED YOUR THOUGHT PROVOKING AND INSPIRING ARTICLE ON SPIRTUALITY AND READ IT THREE TIMES AS IT DESERVED IT. BUT THERE ARE SO MANY QUESTION AS REGARDS TO ITS PRACTICEABLITY. IN YOUR FIRST PARAGRAPH YOU HAVE MENTIONED YOURSELF THAT THE SOCALLED TEACHERS PUT IN OUR MINDS THE FEAR OF SO MANY IMAGINARY CHARACTERS AS GOD,DEVIL OR GHOSTS. NOT ONLY TEACHERS BUT PARENTS USUALLY DO THIS JOB. AND THEY DO IT BECAUSE ALL RELIGION BELIEVE IN IT. ALL BOOKS OF RELIGION PROCLAIM THAT THERE IS GOD WHO HAS SENT THIS MESSAGE AND WHAT EVER HAS BEEN SAID BY GOD CANT BE CHALLANGED BY ANY ONE. MOREALL RELIGONS PROCLAIM THAT THEY ARE THE BEST FOR THAT TIME AND ISLAM CLAIMS TO BE BEST FOR ALL TIMES. MY SECOND OBJECTION IS AS REGARDS TO THE STATEMENT THAT ALL RELIGION ARE FOUNDED ON THE PRINCPLE OF LOVE AND RESPECT FOR HUMANS AS MENTIONED WHILE REPLYING ABOUT SOLUTION QUESTION OF NANCY. IT IS NOT TRUE ALL RELIGIONS ARE BASED ON LOVE FOR GOD AND NOT LOVE FOR HUMANS. SOME OF THEM ALLOW TO KILL HUMANS IF THEY SAY SOME THING AGAINST GOD EVEN MESSANGERS OF GODS BECAUSE THEY ARE CREATED BY MESSANGERS AND NOT BY SOCALLED IMAGINARY GODS. BESIDES EVERY RELIGION HAS CREATED DIFFERINT KINDS OF GODS AS DIFFERENT AS THEIR CREATORS ARE. RELIGION TO WHICH YOU DEFEND BY DIFFERENTIATING IT FROM RELIGIONISM KILL THE THINKING POWER OF HUMANS AND BELIEVE IN INTUTIONS OR WHATEVER HAS BEEN SAID BY SOCALLED PROPHETS. I THINK RELIGION SHOULD NOT BE PUT IN THE INNOCENT MIND OF CHILD OR YOUTH SECIALLY AS IT IS PUT TO WHICH YOU CALL CHILD ABUSE OR IN THE WORDS OF LARRY ' CONTAMINATION OF MIND OF THE CHILD' I WISH I COULD EXPLAIN IT LIKE YOU BUT I DONT HAVE COMMAND ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE LIKE YOU HAVE. Hi Nancy, Thank you for your appreciation of my blog on spirituality. I am also glad to know that it is helping you in your studies of spiritual philosophy. Let me answer your interesting questions one by one. 1. You asked in response to my assertion that there is an element of child abuse in religious teachings of birth religions to children. You said, “…Does this means that all parents are guilty of child abuse?” Whenever we entertain our belief system in the growing mind of a child we are trying to help the child to understand reality from fantasy. Growing child’s mind is easily influenced by magical thinking. Most traditional religions have these spurious claims of righteousness manifested in magical thinking delivered in forms of miracles or mythical stories that do not appease to logical mind. Child’s mind absorbs these stories like a sponge and forms a platform or base upon which an eternal belief system is built during the age of 7 or 8. Child discards most of the magical thinking by then (age 7-8), such as myths of Santa Clause or fairy tails, dragon stories etc. If during that time child is told that the religious belief system of his parents (his birth religion) is fundamentally superior to all the rest of the existing religions and non religions; it limits child’s mind from understanding people from other religions as equal. That fosters the evils of religionism. Parents who foster the evil of religionism in the growing mind of the child are committing child abuse. When this child grows up he/she looks down upon all other religions and non religions. 2. Your second question refers to my statement that all A, B and C are the tools that create evils of religionism. In turn religionism creates bigots and xenophobes. If children are allowed to be bigots and xenophobes, they will never become spiritual in the true sense of the word. Your statement (not question) is, “….Practically every parent inspires in child’s mind the uniqueness of his/her religion. Such declaration of superiority of one’s religion invariably undermines the validity and values of other religion in child’s fragile and growing mind. In other words, according to you, all parents are installing bigotry, xenophobia and evil of religionism in their children….” Proper parenting means giving a child religious education that does not contradict the validity of other belief systems. Neither it degrades or undermines the value system of other religions. If proper parenting is not provided to the child it invariably leads to religionism that creates bigots and xenophobes. 3. Your third question is, “….If this is true then what is the solution?” Solution is proper parenting that emphasizes from an early age (4-5) in the mind of the child that all religions deserve respect because all of them are founded on the similar principle of love and respect for the mankind. Such emphasis must continue all the way till child is of age (18 or sometimes till 21). Parents should never challenge the morality of other religions or non religions in a derogatory way at any time (during that period of mental growth of the child). Proper or improper parenting during those formative years of child (4-18), makes or breaks the child in the world of xenophobia. We will discuss these situations in more detail when we come to the third solution to xenophobia i.e., Re-educating the leaders of the churches’ of all religions. Thank you very much for your interesting questions. I hope you are not confused anymore. Sydshahid syedshahidmd@yahoo.com.au

Hello Dr Shahid, I am also one of the many admirers of your blogs on xenophobia. I am a student of philosophy that deals with “Spiritual Growth and Human Conscious”. I find your articles quite helpful in my studies. Your views are not traditional and appear original and creative. I don’t see much written on this issue before. However, I am very much confused by what you have said in your latest blog as below. Please try to explain further. You said, "....One must understand that there is an element of “Child Abuse” in religious teachings. Therefore, one must know how to avoid it. The essential part of freedom is that religion must never be indoctrinated in the child’s mind by force. That is the worst form of child abuse. If the child is forced to follow the religion of birth (of the parents), the child will be spiritually doomed to be trapped in the outside supernatural forces and will never acquire the most powerful force of his/her own inner self..." My confusion is that most parents teach their children their own religious belief whether child likes it or not. It is pretty much coerced in the child’s mind that the belief of his parent is the one that child has to follow regardless. Child has no choice in this matter. My question is, Does this means that all parents are guilty of child abuse? Then you said, "...However, the most important evil to avoid (when teaching about the birth religion) is the evil of religionism. Religionism means; A. If children are allowed to be bigots and xenophobes, they will never become spiritual in the true sense of the word...." My second question is, Practically every parent inspires in child’s mind the uniqueness of his/her religion. Such declaration of superiority of one’s religion invariably undermines the validity and values of other religion in child’s fragile and growing mind. In other words, according to you, all parents are installing bigotry, xenophobia and evil of religionism in their children. My third question is, If this is true then what is the solution? Looking forward to your response. Nancy
