A couple of years ago, I brought Honey, my then newly adopted 5 yr old Corgi here for a second opinion after our former vet referred us to an oncologist for cancer care. During exploratory surgery & extractions for dental abscesses, Dr. Herb did a biopsy. Thankfully, the result of that biopsy was negative for cancer. I have been using Matanzas River Animal Hospital & Dr. Herbert Nicholas ever since. I absolutely recommend this vet & this practice without reservation. I am so glad I decided to get a second opinion here. In my view, this is the best veterinary practice in St. Augustine. The office is a brand new, state of the art facility & the staff are wonderful with Honey. Consequently, she LOVES to go to the vet! How often can we say that about our fur babies??? If I could give six stars I would.

Took my chihuahua there because she was not eating the way she use to. Dr. Lopez decided to give her vacination shots including bordetella. I do not board my dog so why would she need this shot. She gave it to her without even asking me if I wanted her to have it. My dog has been not right ever since. She constantly sneezes and reverse sneezes that looks like she is going to pass out. I have taken her to other vets to try and find a cure for what happened to her. It has cost me thousands. She is still not right and the way she was before that shot. I believe the dog owner has the right to choose what they want their pet to have and not let the vet make the decision.

They were extremely late to all my appointments. I always had to wait over an hour for them to show up. The magazines in their waiting room were so boring. It made my time in the waiting room drag. I was given a brief greeting when I walked through the door, but no one made any sort of effort to help me. I felt ignored. Every time I've called and left a message, I've never heard back. It's extremely annoying. I have never seen a coupon for this provider, nor do they ever have specials or promotions going on. I don't think they like to help people save money. The vet seemed distracted and short tempered. The place was filthy and the atmosphere was cold. I got a $300 bill, and had to take my cat to a different vet with better hours to cure her

I would caution against taking your pet to this facility. I took my dog there three times; twice I was quoted one price on the phone but was charged more once my dog had received treatment. Although the staff acknowledged their mistakes, they did not adjust my invoices. The office staff and the vets do not communicate with one another nor do the vets communicate with the pet owners. After grooming (misquoted by $20.00 on the price and the grooming itself was a disaster), my dog developed a nail fungus in three nails which - of course - required lab work and antibiotics. While attending to his paw, my dog was apparently given a physical as well... I did not request a physical, was not informed of the charge for this beforehand, and was not asked if this was something I wanted to have done. I had also requested the one-year rabies vaccine but was given the three-year vaccine. Again without being consulted nor informed of the additional charge. Matanzas River Animal Hospital is not about the health and well being of your pet...it is about getting as many charges on your bill as possible...I don't know about their expertise as animal doctors but I do know that they are extremely skilled at sales and at 'upcharging'. I will not be going back. ( I gave them 1/4 star rating because they wouldn't accept a 'no star' rating.)

Absolutely! You can tell that he/she really makes an effort to look professional

Unbelievabley gentle, it is very apparant they truly care about pets well-being and comfort

Absolutely! I always get sound, helpful, and completely unbiased advice!

I was uncomfortable because the equipment they used seemed pretty outdated and old. It got me a little worried that my pet wasn't getting top of the line care. I felt bad for my pets because they were so anxious to leave, I've never experienced a reaction like that before. The veterinarian didn't even do anything to try to calm them down. This vet is not gentle with pets. I'm not sure where they learned their bedside manner, but my pet and I did not like it one bit. My pet was terrified and kept trying to get away. I will never take my animals here again, nor will I recommend this hospital to anyone. I don't want anyone else to experience what I went through.

It was nice to see them treat their staff with so much respect. It was obvious that they had a good relationship with all of their staff members. They've stayed open past their closing times many times when I've needed help. They've never turned me away when I've needed them. I felt very safe in their care. I definitely trust them. Their staff is very friendly and professional.
