Neonatologist Info

Neonatologist Summary:
A neonatologist is a physician that specializes in the care and treatment of critically ill or premature newborn infants who require ICU hospitalization. Neonatologists care for babies who require special medical care due to prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, congenital malformations (birth defects), sepsis, or birth asphyxias. Typically a neonatologist works in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which is a special area of the hospital that is devoted to the care of critically ill babies.

Education and Training: To become a neonatologist, the physician initially receives training as a pediatrician, then must complete an additional 3 year fellowship in neonatology. Most, but not all neonatologists are board certified in the specialty of Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics, and in the sub-specialty of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine also by the American Board of Pediatrics.
