I asked if they did free consultation for LASIK. They said no, if you do the surgery, it's included as part of the cost. This implied that if I did not go through with the surgery or I wasn't a candidate, something else would happen (I would not be charged). Nobody said anything about the cost of the consultation and since I wasn't a candidate, it was a surprise when I received my bill a month later. I called them again, to test them in a way, and once again asked about free consultation. They answered the question in the same way. I asked if they were supposed to answer that way, and she said yes everyone answers the question a certain way.

I did not understand why a conditional "if" statement was used, when in every case, whether I am a candidate or not, I would be charged for the consultation. Why wouldn't they just say no, we don't do free consultation, and leave it at that? Why follow up with if you go through with the surgery, you would be charged for the consultation. To me, this is intentionally attempting to mislead the customer into thinking that they would not be charged in the event that someone was not a candidate.

I received a bill for around $130 even though I have insurance which normally pays for the entirety of an eye exam. I wonder how much they actually charged the insurance company on top of what I wound up paying.

Anyways, I attempted to discuss the issue with them and explain my perspective, and although I had multiple people admit that they do in fact answer the free consultation question that way, they refused to waive the cost. In my mind, this is both unethical and intentionally misleading. They could have sent me a bill for any amount of money, and I would have no option but to pay it because the service had already been performed before I knew I would be charged. Rather than deal with a collection agency and risk affecting my credit rating, I paid the bill.
