Let’s talk about traveling for business in the United States and how to make better, more healthy, and more cost effective choices. Your health is your well being, so when you are traveling it is important to feed your body what it needs to function properly.
As you probably have experienced while sitting on the plane listening to your stomach growl, the food is not very good, it is not healthy, and you have to pay additionally for it. With that said it’s a good idea to pack a small cooler or a bag meal. You wouldn't feed your car bad oil, so why feed your body unhealthy food. There are things you can pack for the plane ride that are healthy, and will in turn help keep your immune system up and keep you healthy.
Let’s talk about what you can pack for the plane. A good protein is important. Think about cooking chicken, turkey, or a ground beef patty. This will sustain you and prevent you from being tempted by "not so healthy" goodies. Fruit, nuts, trail mix, and hard cheeses that don't melt are also items that are good for the plane.
Now at the hotel you may ask for a small refrigerator and a microwave for your room. If you have access to these, google the nearest whole foods or healthy market in the area and go get some food to make your own breakfast if possible, and for some healthy snacks to eat throughout the day. This will also save money, time, and you. Remember that your food is your body's fuel, so you want it to be healthy. Also, eating out can be expensive and it is often difficult to order good for you food.
However if you have to eat out, try and make healthy choices. For example, at lunch you may be able to pick a sandwich on whole wheat bread, or order a salad with lean meat or fish. Try to have dinner be a lean meat with some vegetables, and have a carbohydrate like rice or potato. Stay away from fried foods not only for calories but because they can really upset your stomach due to the rancid oil. You will feel better and stay more healthy on your trip, which will allow you to conduct business more effectively. Your physical state transfers to your mental state and vice-versa!
On the plane ride home you should be set to fill your cooler or make a bag lunch with the leftover food from your refrigerator in your room. This will help keep you satisfied and sickness free on your return home!
