Rhinoplasty or nose job is a surgery that focuses on bringing an improvement in the function of the nose or for changing its shape. Many people go for it for medical reasons, such as for correction of breathing problems in relation to the nose or for correction of disfigurement that results from birth defects or trauma. Many people do it for cosmetic reasons too as they feel that a good change can be brought about in the appearance and shape of the nose.
Schedule a Consultation with a Reliable Plastic Surgeon
If you are considering rhinoplasty, an appointment should be set up with a qualified and experienced surgeon to discuss all your concerns. During the meeting, you should talk about your cosmetic goals and understand what results you can expect from the surgery. The structure of the nose along with other facial features will be evaluated by the surgeon. The surgeon will advise you how important it is to maintain realistic expectations. With this nose reshaping surgery, the facial appearance as a whole can be enhanced. Your overall health will be taken into consideration by the surgeon and he would discuss the costs involved, the time taken for recovery as well as the risks.
The Nose Reshaping Surgery Procedure
The surgeon first administers general anesthesia or intravenous sedation for your comfort. There are mainly two techniques for shaping the nose, the open method and the closed method. In the closed method, the incisions are hidden inside the nose whereas in the open procedure the incision is made across the columella or the narrow tissue strip that separates the nostrils. Then, the cartilage and the inner bone are reshaped for producing a more pleasing appearance. In case the septum is deviated, the surgeon would straighten it to improve breathing. When the nasal structure is sculpted to the desired shape, the nasal tissue and skin are redraped and the incisions are closed.
Post Surgery
After rhinoplasty, a nasal splint is worn for the first week. Some bruising and swelling can be expected after the surgery. However, after the 3rd day, improvements are noticed. In some cases, the bruising and swelling may last up to a couple of weeks. Any minor swelling that remains will go away within a period of 6 months. The final nose shape is apparent once the healing is complete. Strenuous activity should be avoided for around 6 weeks after the surgery. Normal social activities can be resumed within 3 weeks after the procedure is performed.
