Top Five Women’s Health Concerns - Part 3

Today is day 3 of our discussion on the top five women's health concerns,with Stroke being number three on the list.

Not to alarm you, but here are some disturbing facts about women and strokesfrom Healthy Women, HarrisInteractive in 2010 :

  • 425,000 women have a stroke each year; this is 55,000 more than men.
  • In a study, only 27 percent of women could name more than two of the six primary stroke symptoms.
  • In the same study, seven out of 10 women said they are not aware they are more likely than men to have a stroke, and were not aware  of the risk factors.
  • African-American women have more strokes than Caucasian women.
  • Stroke is the number one cause of death for Hispanic women.

Symptoms of Stroke

Even though we are focusing onwomen's health, here are some common stroke symptoms seen in both men andwomen:

  • Suddennumbness or weakness of face, arm or leg -- especially on one side of the body
  • Suddenconfusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Suddentrouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Suddentrouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Suddensevere headache with no known cause

Women mayreport unique stroke symptoms:

  • Sudden face and limb pain
  • Sudden hiccups
  • Sudden nausea
  • Sudden general weakness
  • Sudden chest pain
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Sudden palpitations

Whileit's not possible for you to control some risk factors of stroke such as familyhistory, age, and race, you can control other contributing factors. Some examplesof things that may increase risk of stoke include:

  • Increasing rates of obesity
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Drinking diet soda
  • High blood sugar levels
  • Consumption of trans-fats
  • Eating smoked and processed Meats
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Psychological distress
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Birth control pills
