Traditionally, the DASH-or Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension-diet has been prescribed to overweight adults. But a recent study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine are proposing that DASH is not only safe for teenage girls, but it has been proven to decrease their weight gain. The study followed approximately 2,000 girls over a period of ten years- and those who adhered to the guidelines of the DASH diet were found to have the smallest amount of weight gain. The diet itself mainly consists of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat and nonfat dairy, meat, fish, and nuts, and it limits sugar, red meat, and fat intake.
