College Station Metabolic Doctor: Japan's Radiation, Iodine and Your Health

Seven Things You Should Know About Japan's Radiation, Iodine, and Your Health

  1. Radioactive iodine is released from nuclear events like nuclear power plant accidents.

  2. The radioactive iodine finds its way to the thyroid gland of exposed persons, causing damage and even cancer in some cases.

  3. Iodine supplements given to protect the thyroid gland from radiation damage.  Iodine supplements are most effective in protecting children and young people.

  4. Iodine supplements are most effective for exposed persons within 200 miles of a radiation exposure source.  Further away than that, iodine supplements probably will not be needed.

  5. Iodine supplements can have a significant adverse effect in persons with certain conditions, like thyroid disease, and other autoimmune conditions.  Iodine supplements in these persons should only be used with close health care professional supervision.

  6. Iodine deficiency is generally widespread, and there is evidence that cardiovascular, breast, and prostate problems are connected with iodine deficiency.

  7. There is no reliable test to measure iodine deficiency.
