Live Well & Prosper--Health Lessons from Mr. Spock

Actually, that is never specifically revealed.  In the episode "Amok Time," for example, we learn that Nurse Chapel makes him plomeek soup but, in spite of it being splattered all over the ship's wall, we never learn what is actually in it.  Some people have suggested that it contained some vegetables available only on the planet Vulcan, together with broccoli, tomatoes, celery, and human spices, but that is only an educated guess.

We can, however, say that some of Mr. Spock's health practices and eating habits are worth lauding, or at least mentioning. Here are the most notable examples:

  1. He doesn't over-eat.  Whenever we see Spock eating, he eats very sparingly.  This may be why he is never overweight.  Because he suppresses emotions, Mr. Spock doesn't appear to use food as a coping mechanism, although he is not afraid to use it as a weapon or protesting tool (as in the case of telling Nurse Chapel to leave him alone by slamming that delicious vegetable soup against the wall).
  2. His blood is, supposedly, green.  This may be an indication that he eats lots of chlorophyll-containing plants?
  3. He avoids fat-laden animal protein foods.  By that time (several centuries beyond our time), science has no doubt confirmed what we now strongly suspect:  that fat/cholesterol high foods are responsible for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other ailments.  They also probably abandoned eating herbicide, growth hormone & antibiotics laden animal meats--probably the main source of many autoimmune disorders and several types of cancer.
  4. He isn't sexually promiscuous.  In fact, Vulcans seem to suffer from a mating ritual fever only every 7 years.  While this may lead to potentially dangerous sexual repression issues in full humans, it can also protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
  5. He is constantly on the move, both physically and mentally.  We don't have to travel into the future to know that a sedentary lifestyle is a recipe for disaster, health-wise.  Beyond regularly physically exercising, though, we also need to keep our brains constantly working.  Coming up with ship/world-saving formulas and scientific discoveries might be the norm for Mr. Spock--for us, reading on a regular basis, taking courses or simply doing simple mental exercises may be enough.

I admit I'm a geek for the original Star Trek series. I would never have thought of writing such a blog. I'm glad you did. Fun take and a nice lasting memory of a great American icon.
