Microtia surgery is performed to correct conditions such as a small ear with recognizable structures and a small external ear canal, an incomplete ear with a stenotic (closed off) external ear canal that is causing conductive hearing loss, existence of a small peanut vestige structure but non-existence of the external ear, the ear drum, and the external ear canal, anotia or non-existence of the whole ear.

Microtia ear reconstruction surgery can be performed at any time after the child is large enough to allow for enough cartilage to be taken.  Reconstruction is accomplished with two and sometimes three procedures. The first procedure is to create a new ear in the correct position, and it takes approximately 5 hours and the recovery time is approximately 3 days. During this stage, cartilage is extracted from the ribs and carved, molded, and reshaped to form a new ear in the right position. The second procedure raises that ear off the side of the head, and this is performed approximately four months after the first. It involves the creation of the fold and projection behind the ear. A third procedure is sometimes needed for piercing the ears for wearing earrings.

No artificial materials are used in ear reconstruction. Cartilage from the child’s own body is used. The added advantage is that it involves only minimal risk when compared to other treatment options.
