Upon entering the Site MD Garden City, NY office on Monday, July 6, 2020 at about 4:30pm, I noticed the small waiting room. I was surprised that a medical practice during these uncertain times even allowed to have a waiting room nevertheless patients actually IN THE WAITING ROOM.
I checked in for my 96 year old mother with the receptionist It was only about 15 minutes after I checked in and completed my paperwork, that she checked mine and my mother's temperature. While I was at the desk, 3 other patients arrived and sat down, and filled the socially distanced chairs. Not one temperature was taken upon their arrival (I am unsure as to when/if temperatures were taken) These patients ALL could have had temperature but the damage was done. We were now in this small poorly ventilated waiting room.
Next, we were directed from reception to "test" area to exam room one and then exam room 2 where we finally met with the doctor. The staff were all wearing masks and gloves. However, I did not witness any changing of gloves nor washing hands with gloves by either the assistant that I first saw or the doctor.
The exam was not thorough and I felt as if the doctor was just going through the "exam motions". Dr Van did not bother to ask of any medical concerns. After conducting her less than mediocre exam she suggested that one more test was needed. It was back to the first "test area". Please note that this test area is not a room but a passageway to go from the front waiting/reception to the exam rooms.
Dr. Van did not wait for us to follow her to the next test. I had to move the equipment in the exam room to assist my mother with her walker, and make sure she did not fall or get struck by the swinging equipment. We did not know where Dr. Van had disappeared so we sat down in the "thoroughfare test area" where I had to question who is assisting my mother. Finally, the assistant arrived, tested my mother's eyes again. We were told that Dr. Van would be here in a few minutes.
At this juncture and after waiting more than a few minutes, I noticed the office was getting crowded and there was a bit of traffic heading through this "test" area. A mother and her son soon sat down next to us on this "testing area." There were now 5 of us sitting in this "thoroughfare". Fearing my mother's health, I told the receptionist that I did not feel safe/ and mine an my mother's health was as risk as there was too much "traffic" and wanted to leave.
I peered into the waiting room, and now there was at least 7 people sitting next to one another along the wall. There was obviously no social distancing. I did not want to observe the other part of the room as I knew it was crowded. I asked to wait in another room because I for fear of COVID. One of the staff members told me that if I went into another room, the doctor may forget that I was in the office.
I asked for my Rx, again, and explained my concern for my health. The receptionist called the doctor who emerged from another exam room and quickly went over our last test results. At that point I just wanted to get out of that unhealthy office. Finally, upon leaving, we were handed the Rx. I will not attempt to fill this Rx as the doctor did not take the time to explain it and I question that the Rx is correct. (I did find a review when I researched further that this office gave one patient and her husband incorrect Rx after they filled them and paid for new glasses! )
My time was wasted and my and my mother's health was put in jeopardy. However my main concern is our health. This office showed every lack of concern for following COVID-19 protocol. This is a practice of just moving the patients unsafely in and out, to collect the premium and disregard health concerns. If I could "return" the treatment like we can return department store merchandise, I would DEMAND the return.
