Going to Callahan Animal Hospital was the absolute worst experience ever! We had to make the difficult decision to put our English Mastiff, Lola, to sleep. She had cancerous tumors, hardly eating & hind legs barely able to hold her up. We are new to the Callahan area, so chose this vet because it was close & the 1st one we had called. We made an appointment for 12 noon. When we arrived, no one was up front & we had to ring a bell for service. The lady came up, didn't introduce herself or greet us, just stated she tried to call my cell (no record) to ask if we wanted to take the body home or have them dispose of it, because it's extra if we dispose of it. We asked what is the cost and she yells to a man in the back of the building, how much? He yells, what kind of dog? She yells, big mastiff, He yells, what's it weigh? I'm not sure. He finally comes up to where we are, no introduction & says we'll put her on the scale. He takes her to a large scale in a cramped hallway. Asks me to come pay. The price goes up $130 more than I was told over the phone. He runs my card 3 or 4 times, but cant figure out the credit card machine. He said they'd had problems all morning, so I have to write a check for $230. I wish we had taken Lola & left. However, I walked back to the scale in the hallway expecting to be moved to an exam room, but he decided to perform the procedure there... in this cramped hallway, on the scale. He shaves her left front leg and tries to inject her with the needle, but cant find a vein. He actually BENT the needle on my poor Lola! She winced and leaned toward us to get away from him, but he pulled her back saying he'd give her a sedative to calm her nerves. It seemed the sedative was actually so we wouldn't realize how much he was hurting our dog. He gave her the sedative, shaved her other front leg, changed out the needle & starting digging in her right front leg. It took a couple minutes to administer it all. We were crying, no tissues to be found, not a single word of consolation. The vet leaves & returns with a black plastic bag & tells us to help him put her in it & drag her to the back. That's when I finally spoke up. I asked him, ARE YOU SERIOUS??? You are telling me that WE are supposed to put Lola in a trash bag & carry her for you, like garbage??? What did we pay the extra $130 for??? No apology, no concern, the vet simply said, Its not a trash bag & asked me to go outside so my husband could help him. He made our heartbreaking experience even more devastating with his uncaring demeanor. I want to share my experience to save someone else from ever making the mistake of using this heartless veterinarian.
