We use Fisher Hollow Clinic and have always had good results with our pets. Good to have a local Vet as opposed to having to take your pet on a long trip to Abingdon or further.

ATTENTION! Do Some Research Before you let just anyone work on your animal!!!! (I learned this the hard way.) Summed up version of a long story…my puppy’s injured leg was not cleaned; staples were placed in it while she was awake with no numbing or pain meds. (Turns out they were useless and not in a spot that did anything beneficial). She bled like crazy and was given no medication or care instructions. Her injury was wrapped to tight and she could have lost her foot, due to it! In Conclusion, I will NEVER be back and I advise others to proceed with caution. Yes, this is just one example because I will only speak for myself from personal experience… but once checking around after the horrible event I found that what happened to my baby was sadly not an unusual story!

I am not usually the type to post reviews, but I would feel horrible if I do not share my experience and something similar happened to another beloved animal. I took my puppy to Matthew Garrett at Fisher Hollow Veterinary Clinic (Jeb Stuart Hwy. Damascus, VA), hoping to find a vet that would care for her as much as I do. I listened to the commercials and internet posts that say they treat the animals like family…..well that is far from the impression I received!

I took my puppy to the vet because she had stepped on something while playing outside that caught the pad on the back of her leg and pulled it loose. The cut was pretty bad. At the vets office Garrett had me hold my puppy while he pulled the bandage off her that I had put on to stop the bleeding. My puppy being in sever pain scrambled trying to get away from the stranger who had not said a single word to her before he began yanking on her leg. He preceded to man handle her roughly, holding on to her injured leg. He yelled for the other to workers to join us. He then put a muzzle on her (which is understandable, I suppose for his safety… but she is not a vicious dog and was not trying to bite him she had her head buried between my shoulder and neck) but the muzzle was too small and he had to force it on her face. He snapped it shut on her skin pinching it and forcing her to struggle even more, wincing in more pain. Once he got the too small muzzle on her, he told me to hold her tight and the two helpers held her legs.

He grabbed the STAPLE device and roughly placed 3 staples in my puppy’s leg. I was in total shock. He NEVER cleaned the injured area. He NEVER numbed my baby’s leg! The THIRD staple was the worst…blood went EVERYWHERE. At this point my poor baby was trembling and I was shacking and light-headed. He grabbed some wrap and wrapped her foot up so blood would stop going everywhere. He let her go, looked at the assistant and said she needs to come back to have the staples taken out…then he walked out of the room. No care instruction, no pain meds, no antibiotics, NOTHING. I sat my trembling baby on the floor and joined her, because I was starting to sway like I was about to pass out. I was offered no assistance and stumbled into the next room to ask if they could at lease hold her leash while I recovered. The receptionist hooked the leash around her arm and went back to typing while I sat, head down, trying to recover.

Once I was finally able to stand again I paid $50 for the crappy treatment and was told to come back in a couple of weeks. I asked when to change the bandage and was told not to remove it until 3 days had passed. Upon leaving I was in total shock over what had just happened. I had no experience with anything that needed staples so at the time I did not know if this was common practice or not, but I had a horrible gut feeling it was not.

When I got home I put my puppy to bed and went back to town to the store. While I was gone I received a phone call from my parents stating that they had come in to check on her and the injured foot was, no joke, at least 5 times bigger than the other foot. When I arrived back home and inspected the bandage, I realized (due to some phone calls and internet searches) that if it was not removed her foot could possibly rupture and may or may not be savable if it happened. It took 30mins to get the bandage off of her because the foot had swollen so bad that I could not get anything under it to cut it. It was taped securely. I could not even find an edge. Finally I found a way to remove it. (It took 3 people working with her to get it off!) IMMEDIATELY the swelling started going down as we watched the blood flow back up her leg. Within 30mins the foot was almost the exact size it should be.

I took my baby girl to Glade Spring Veterinary Clinic (Glove Dr. Glade Springs, VA) to have a different opinion on her injury. These people were SOO friendly and talked to my puppy like she was one of their own. The vet was in shock when I told him her experience! Apparently, it is not common practice to not clean injuries, place staples without numbing or sedating, or wrap an injury like hers the way Garrett did.

I cringe to think about all the pain my baby went through! The vet at Glade Springs removed the staples and told us they were not even located in a way that was doing anything at all. She simply had USELESS staples! (All that pain and the stupid staples were useless!!!!) He cleaned her injury, gave her an antibiotic, gave me care instructions to help it heal, and ideas to help with pain. As well as, instructions on how to wrap her leg to prevent swelling or blood being restricted.

If you are looking for a vet please do some research!!! Do not put your baby through an experience like mine went through. I feel horrible that my lack of knowledge allowed her to be treated in such a horrible way! Today, thanks to Glade Springs Veterinary Clinic, my baby girl is all healed up and doing wonderful.
