Dr. Gualtieri is an excellent psychotherapist. Smart, kind, thoughtful. My husband and I, who were seeing Dr. Gualtieri for issues with our son, felt heard and understood.
A comment to two previous posters about their disappointment with Dr. Gualtieri re marital counseling: In my experience, the goal of marital counseling is NOT to save a marriage; it is to clarify issues.

I was very satisfied with my visit. He was extremly helpful. He listened to me, and I left feeling encouraged about my situation. Dr. Gualtieri is very empathic, and has offered support which was what I needed to get me through my struggles. He has helped me with many problems. He also has assisted me in getting a better understand of myself. Dr. Gualtieri is a total professional, and adds value to the his field.
He is non-judgmental, and very insighful.

Have periodically utilized professional psychologists/marriage counselors with my wife to successful outcomes in difficult times during our long marriage…that is until John Gualtieri. Over a year of marriage counseling with John resulted in only counter-productive results – first time in my experience that the counseling itself increased tensions and provided confusion – there were no redeeming skills brought forth that could be used in our marriage (an objective clearly agreed upon upfront). John is inconsistent in his approach, changing direction and reducing confidence in decisions and undermined the belief my wife and I had that we could get through tough times. No clear focus on what we were trying to accomplish and given no advice or skills that could be used outside of his basement/cellar office. Frequent use of cliché' psych 101 questions (how do you feel?”), often steering you to see things one way (this is just short term and you have always been good at X), only to change direction in subsequent sessions making completely contradictory statements (you’ve always been weak at X), all the while, words emanating from a seemingly detached and often bored counselor. Seriously believe John needs to evaluate an alternative career or go back to square one and get re-educated. If you want to ensure a downward slide to divorce, by all means start your sessions with John.

DO NOT USE John Gualtieri, MD if you're in marriage therapy and have any hope to save your marriage. He is absolutely worthless, and a waste of time and your/your insurance money. 10 months of, "How does that make you feel when she/ he says that?" is no help. Duh, we came to you because we were frustrated, hurt, and/or angry with each other" In the end this man lied to me when he told me he had no idea why my wife wanted a divorce ... the very next morning after she met with him! Well then maybe he should fInd another career, ya think?
