Dwayne played a significant role in doing nothing short of "saving my life." It seemed Dwayne and I had a clash of personalities, his brutal truth in your face reality check, reminded me of my father in the worst way. But at the end of the day, after 7 months of shooting me straight, i came to realize that some of my resentment for Dwayne was due to the fact that my bullshit wasnt penetrating his hardline stance of years of experience, personal as well as professional, of having seen my act all before.
Today I love Dwayne for his part in my recovery and for doing what he does for folks reaching out for a lifeline in lieu of death. I admire folks in this industry. How easy it would be to pick up and walk away from this work. Counselors as such instill HOPE in the hopeless, finding a way of making a knot at the end of our proverbial rope, never doing it FOR you, but always inching that window of recovery a little wider for those compelled to seek recovery. those willing to do whatever it takes. to do whatever you are told to do. to listen. to just not pick up. to accept change. to be patient. to accept the powerlessness of addiction. to be mindful of expectations. Finally, to take whatever plan of a path forward one can muster, and understand and accept and make piece with this fact...: "LIFE IS ON LIFE'S TERMS, NOT OUR TERMS" After almost 13 years clean and sober I can attest that one will fight and nash teeth so long as one does not accept that statement.
Thank you Dwayne for providing me a safe environment to learn to live again. You told me once, recovery is not about not using, it's about learning to live again.
thank you Dwayne for providing me the opportunity to extend my life past the muck and mire you found me in, and allowing me a chance at recovery and learning to live life again.
I'll probably never be where I want to be, but God knows I'm not where I use to be.
Be well Dwayne.

Clean and sober since June 2, 2000.
