My child's therapist has been really helpful to my child over the past couple of years. But in recent months, my child has had added stress and we agreed that my child might benefit from meds. When the psychiatrist saw my child, she recommended a medication that my insurance wouldn't cover. Instead of offering one of the large number of alternatives, she insisted on trying to get approval for the medication and to date, I haven't heard anything. I'd guess that she gets big kickbacks from the drug company to prescribe that medication. In the meantime, my child is without meds.
First of all, the address and phone listed are incorrect. The correct address is 6200 Beach Channel Drive and the correct phone number is 718-945-7150 but good luck getting someone to help you on the phone if you call. The therapist I have been working with is like a reassuring grandfather who is hip with the trend and lifestyle of "da hood". I give him 5 stars! But when I'm in the waiting room which is sometimes crowded, I see the psychiatrist come from her office with a patient loudly discussing the patient's medication, symptoms, and confidential information in front of everybody. I have also seen her several times, sitting at the receptionist's desk in the waiting room, having a phone conversation regarding a patient, and revealing the patient's name and personal information for everyone to overhear in the waiting room.
I was on the waiting list for two months. When I was seen they wanted to send me for an alcohol screening at another center because I enjoy a cognac after dinner out. Once I passed that stage things got worse. No appointments were available for the psychiatrist so I had to be a "walk in" and wait. When I had a question about a possible side effect of my medication, I was told I would have to speak to my social worker! Why? She doesn't prescribe medication, the MD does. When i was successful in makibg an appointment with the psychiatrIst, the secretary called and rescheduled it leaving me without my psychiatric medication for two days! A couple of friends who claim to have gotten good care but they both have a mature man as their therapist. I did some research and found that this place got an abysmal review from the NY State Office of Mental Health in 2012 so my experience probably isn't unique. If you only need counseling and not medication, the mature man who helped my friends might bed worth seeking out. Otherwise, go elsewhere.
