The assistant administrator Myra Batac is a nasty rude filpino woman with a bad attitude. She knows nothing about treating people with respect. She only cares about the money she gets under the table from VITAS. She does not care about patients or people or anyone. Send your loved ones to ant other place besides Santa Monica Convalescent Center. You'll thank me later.

The best things about this nursing home ("SMCC")is that 1) it is relatively clean, smelling better than most, and 2) its location in a pleasant neighborhood. SMCC is within walking distance of cafe's, parks, and other services, both on Pico and Ocean Park Bl, where you can take a wheelchair-bound patient to entertain them.

I would say about 85% of the nursing aid staff are OK, and a few are great. Their entertainment coordinator, Patti, really goes the extra mile, and one of the CSA staff, Leah, takes her job very seriously - she's gotten her LPN recently, and she's going for the full RN degree.

However, in general, this a NOT a nursing home that takes pride in their place, other than keeping it clean and decorating for holidays (and making the place look pleasant for visiting family.)

One of their main problems is that they are understaffed, often under-trained, and under- or badly-supervised. Other clients' family members and I have complained numerous times, to no avail. My Mom is on Medicare/Medicaid, so we are limited in our nursing home choice.

Clients often suffer theft or lost items; are over- or inapproriately drugged using anti-psychotics, off-label; and may be neglected unless the family complains. Equipment is old, sometimes broken, and seldom replaced.

SMCC is notable for their Scrooge-like accounting, which verges on corruption. (The owner is an accountant.) This is a place where you NEED to know and ENFORCE your rights. Read your Medicare/Medicaid literature, and insist on what you are entitled to! Insist on choosing your own doctors and AVOID their "dentist"! (I recommend those from Cedars-Sinai, which accepts Medicare/ Medicaid).

Long story short - if you must place your loved one in a nursing home on a budget, this is a clean place in a nice neighborhood. BUT I advise you to take ALL the important elements of their care into your own hands, and stop in semi-daily/nightly at surprise times to visit, to see what's really going on, and supervise.

Good luck.
