My wife has been a patient for around 10 years and I for maybe 7 years now. I used to hold Dr McLeod in high regard, but no longer. We had a bill for around $60 or 70 which went unpaid, indeed we weren't even aware of it until it went to collections; poor communication, a problem which made itself very apparent later on. Unfortunate but these things can happen. We spoke to the office manager who confirmed that we could pay the bill off directly through them, which we eventually were able to do. At no point did we receive confirmation or receipts of our two payments but the collections agency did send updates showing the amount on that bill reduced (there was a much larger bill from another provider rolled in with it, which the agency would not agree to handle separately, hence our choice to pay direct to McLeod's office, which they informed us would be acceptable).

When my wife broke two back teeth recently we called to set an appointment but were told by a relatively new member of the office staff that "I've been instructed not to set any appointments for you". She was unable or unwilling to provide a reason but promised that someone who could would get back to me.

We never did get that callback, or to talk to someone who could give us answers, despite repeated attempts to speak to them. It would not be a stretch to say that I felt like the people who could tell us what was going on were actively avoiding us, hiding behind a member of staff who was new to the job. All we wanted to know was why the appointment could not be set, and what needed to happen to straighten things out. A simple call. They were unwilling to do that, a complete failure to communicate important information to us and in my opinion, highly unprofessional conduct.

After over a week we were (finally!) notified by certified letter that we were *both* being discharged as patients. Reasons given for the discharge included:

"Bill unpaid for over a year". Yes, it was; but had since been paid off, and at no time were we given any impression that settling the bill would not correct the issue. They also cited "other unpaid bills" having run a credit check as admitted right there in the letter. We cleared his bill, other bills are frankly none of his business. *He was never given permission to run a credit check.*

"3 missed appointments without a 24 hour notice". Again, not in dispute, however the last of these was a couple of years ago, this was over almost a 10 year period, and one of those was because my wife had to fly across country on short notice when her mother passed.

"Excessive requests for prescriptions". Some of these were mild sedatives prior to major dental work (my wife is a nervous dental patient) which were agreed to at the time; as I recall, he may himself have suggested this. Many were for antibiotics to keep abscesses under control until we could afford to pay to be seen. Again, all of this is very old news, the last of those prescriptions being months ago; at no point did he ever register concern about this, yet it's cited as a reason for dismissal.

"Threatening phone calls" - no. Certainly not. We did call repeatedly (once or twice a day for a week) because we needed someone to act like a professional and tell us what was going on, a simple courtesy which was never extended to us. We did point out that there was a dental emergency ongoing and that their unwillingness to offer an appointment or even an explanation might constitute medical abandonment. It's a sad world indeed if pointing out an ethical responsibility is viewed as a "threat".

In the letter we eventually did receive, NO offer to continue emergency coverage while we find a new dentist was made even though they were made aware of the emergency situation. This resulted in a trip to the ER so that my wife could receive *some* sort of treatment while she waits for the appointment she set with a new dentist. Getting in with a new dentist is not something that one can just wake up one morning and do; it takes time, something McLeod would be entirely familiar with when he chose to withhold emergency treatment.

Our "firing" as patients was handled in the most unprofessional manner I've ever had the misfortune to be involved with and could almost certainly have been avoided entirely had they had the common courtesy to communicate properly with us, return a call when requested and explain the situation before it came to a head.

Dr. McLeod is an excellent dentist and his nurse/assistants are great. His front girl is professional but a bit curt and not the best bedside manner. That is OK... not everyone is "Warm and Fuzzy". We have been in crisis mode in my family over the last few years with the deaths within 3 years of both of my parents, job loss due to health, losing our house, my spouse having to take a second job while still taking care of me and the death of two more family members (all out of state). I owed about $60 and we were behind on all our bills, including rent; eating beans, mac and cheese, even getting help. Being a decade long patient of Dr McLeod's, and bringing in thousands of dollars with extensive dental work (root canal's, crowns, etc), I did not feel his front end girl would 'understand' the way he would because he is .... or I thought was.... seemed to be very empathetic. I was wrong. For reasons un be knownst to me.... either the whooping $60 (now overpaid ..... I have a credit)..... and weighing that I had NEVER owed them money in 10 years, always paid, and brought in several $1,000 in dental work to his practice, there are only 2 possible reasons. The $60 that took a while to pay. $60 vs. decade long patient who has really had a ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH patch; paid 1/2 several weeks ago but then had several more bumps oh and am due to have extensive neck surgery. Only ONE Dr in Roanoke will even do the neck surgery. But I am waiting ..... too stressed right now. OR, I simply put in the letter, I felt more comfortable explaining to him because while his front in girl was professional, she could be a bit curt. I did not rag her out or say she was an awful person. My husband agrees and friends that go there also agree 100% across the board. I simply felt more comfortable 'spilling my guts' to the Dr himself. 1st, we got no receipt (and I sent a self addressed, stamped envelope to send the receipt) and I know it was received because we got mail confirmation. Also, BY LAW if you are discharging a patient, you have to send a certified letter with 30 days notice and give 30 days emergency care. It is the law in VA. None has been done. This is not a dental emergency anymore, this is a medical emergency. I have two broken teeth, one on each side and CANNOT EAT. I am post gastric bypass which means I mal absorb and only get about 50% of my nutrients as is. If I am on all smoothies and only taking in 50% I reckon I will be mal-nurished withint 2 weeks. Good dentist..... if you are PERFECT.
