I signed up to have Dr. Baecher become my "Primary Care Physician". They sent me their standard packet of forms, including their "Welcome to Our Practice" letter. It included this thought-provoking statement:
"Our office has a strict policy about prescribing narcotic medications. We do not prescribe narcotics for chronic, non-cancer pain"
I wasn't sure I understood this, so I called and spoke with them. "What if I got in a terrible accident, broke my back, and had horrible pain?" I asked. "Are you sure I should suffer in agony for the rest of my life?" Essentially, yes, was their reply. They just don't believe in alleviating pain, apparently. While it's been 2 decades since I last took opioid pain medicine, I know that it is sometimes medically necessary. To deny it to those in need is not just bad medical practice. In my humble opinion, it's unkind and unethical.
