I had to end my patient relationship with this doctor (and it took almost a year for him to transfer my records to my new, current doctor). There was no sense of privacy when Dr. Bernad kept the doors of patient rooms open. I didn't appreciate having several interns in the room at the same time where Dr. Bernad paid more attention to (and joked with) them, than to me, the patient. I felt I was no longer being listened to or being helped by this doctor. The staff is -- and always was -- awful (rude, inattentive, the type of people who should not be working in a doctor's office). The wait times were ridiculous; my longest wait was once almost 3 hours (as much as I wanted to walk out, I couldn't, as I had taken the afternoon off from work), and the doctor offered no apology and could care less. He was great initially, but the more I went back, the worse it got, to the point it had to end.

Main complaints:

1) long wait time for all appointments ... really, really long wait time. First appointment - Dr. Bernad was very chatty, so much so that we have a 40 minute conversation having nothing to do with my medical issue. I assumed that this was because I was a new patient and he wanted me to feel comfortable, which I appreciated.

2) Second appointment - very painful (and unnecessary according the neurologist I consulted after Dr. Bernad) tests in which he came in at the end, only gave me 45 seconds of his time, and still didn't do anything to help with my pain. Just told me to schedule yet another appointment. Blew me off, kept suggesting I try things I was already doing (apparently he didn't bother listening to me while I was speaking).

3) Third (and last) appointment. After waiting an hour and a half I was ushered into his office. He came in, sat down for thirty seconds, then announced he would be giving me a nerve blocker and walked toward me with a syringe. Terrifying. He didn't tell me what it would do, or ask if I wanted it. Before he stuck the needle in my neck I made him stop, and asked him what was in the syringe. It had the same suffix as a medication I've had a very serious reaction to. Dr. Bernad knew about this complication, we had discussed it in our first meeting. I asked if it was related to that drug, which I had that complication to. He said "oh! that would've been embarrassing!" and laughed it off, saying that he had patients in the waiting room and it would have been awkward to roll me out in a body bag. Seriously, he said that. You have GOT to be kidding me! At that point I was terrified and freaked out, and just wanted to get out of there as fast as possible.

4) Sleep studies - Dr. Bernad recently opened up a center for administering sleep studies (Capitol Sleep Centers). He did not mention that he owned this center, I found that out through another source. He repeatedly (every session, and twice during the second appointment) told me I should have a sleep study done there. I asked him how that was related to my pain, and he said "you never know, you might have a sleep problem". And he prescribed my husband (who is not a patient of his) to have a sleep study done as well. Somehow I think it would have been more appropriate if he had mentioned that he had a financial interest in the place he was trying to get us to go. We should be able to trust that medical advice is not financially motivated.

5) Insurance billing - Though I never received the nerve blockers (as evidenced by the fact that I'm still breathing), my insurance was charged for them anyway. After calling the insurance fraud line, Dr. Bernad's office said that it had been a mistake and removed it from the bill to the insurance company right away. Four weeks later I received a bill, trying to get ME to pay for it! Seriously?! At best it was the office being irresponsible. This is just my opinion.

6) Staff – very rude … I won’t list names here, but if you’ve ever been to his office, you’ll know who I’m talking about.

Conclusion - I would never ever ever go here again.
