Dr. Peter Hughes after a MRI insisted my knee pain due to degenerative arthritis would vastly improve after orthescopic surgery as he would clean out the loose cartilege. He went in and assured me I would be back at work in a day. After the day's procedure at the Tully I went home and never recovered. My knee was swollen for months and the pain was excruciating. Each visit to him never improved my condition as he put me on pain killers and anti inflamotories. I consulted my current doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery who said I had to have a knee replacement or else my condition would only worsen. She tells me over and over again Dr. Hughs should never have performed orthescopic surgery on my knee. I went in for my knee replacement on an already stressed knee and my recovery was longer. He is a highly overrated charlatan who saw the dollar signs and a quick way to make a buck. I have suffered in vain due to his diagnosis and subsequent action.

You get hurt, you are in pain, you can get pretty grouchy. Everything annoys you, even people trying to help. Then Dr. Hughes walks in and he turns out to be so attentive, kind and thorough. It can defuse a crummy situation to have a great MD take care of you. I am glad I trusted my instincts rather than the reviews below, he and his staff deserve much better. I recommended him to my husband and he is also very pleased with him.

You better bring your credit card they want their money up front or they will not let you back to see the Dr. even if you have insurance that you think is covering entire bill. They couldn't even give me a real billing/payment printout. Its a shame because the Drs are good. I hope this is not what will happen everywhere with because of Obama care

While the staff was generally quite friendly and the office is convenient in terms of parking and accessibility, I had an overall negative experience with Dr. Hughes and OAS. I went in with an admitedly minor but troublesome injury, and I was treated dismissivly by the doctor. That did not stop them from taking x-rays, which is understandibly precautionary but also expensive. My real frustration came with the follow up visit where the doctor informed me that I had to have an MRI done, which I did, only to find out that "as he suspect" it was just a sprain. I feel the office manipulated the system and ordered tests that were not necessary for the injury, which is a large expense for both myself and for the insurance company. Long story short, I would not recommend seeing Dr. Hughes or his associates at OAS.

I visited Orthopaedic Associates after breaking my foot and was referred by Stamford Hospital. Dr. D'Amico was really great- I had a lot of confidence in his abilities and felt I was taken care of very well. I would recommend his service as a doctor to anyone.

However, that said, two things that make this practice a two star review.

1. The secretaries at this place are awful. They are a bunch of chatterboxes who don't care about the customer. I needed to get a handicapped parking pass for NY state and they were clueless and unhelpful- basically told me to figure it out myself since they are located in CT. Just dealing with them in general over 6 or so visits was like pulling teeth.

2. I felt I was taken advantage of in terms of pricing. The doctor gave me a walking boot for my foot after 8 or so weeks after the accident. I come to find out through my insurance company that I owe a few hundred dollars co-pay for it (apparently I was only covered for part of the boot, fine). What irks me here is that the office charges 500 dollars for the walking boot, when the SAME EXACT boot goes for 60 dollars online. That is a pretty absurd markup, even for a doctors office. I brought the online ads to the office to ask why they charge an exorbitant amount, but they basically told me to piss off- the lady in charge of the pricing said that's just what they charge. The doctor said he doesn't know, and that other places charge even more. Not very helpful - this is why people hate our health care system. Practices like these.

So, to be clear, I would recommend Dr. D'amico very highly. However, I would NOT recommend this practice given my experience.
