My main problem with this doctor was that he failed to contact my insurance company prior to doing a procedure, and then he tried to saddle me with a huge bill (well into the thousands) approximately 1.5 years after the surgery. In fact, he performed procedures without getting approval from the insurance company twice. I did not make an issue out of the other incident because it was not worth any hassle, despite the amount he charged me being more than I would have owed if my insurance company had been contacted. It is clearly labeled on my chart that any procedure must be pre-approved by my insurance company. My insurance company's policy is that the provider must call to get approval (not the policy holder). Nonetheless, the doctor's billing service tried to place the responsibility on me, and offered to help me out by cutting the bill by 50%. The billing service also threatened to put me into collections if I did not pay the bill. The doctor's office that referred me to Dr. Gould spoke with billing on my behalf and the person who called was also treated rather aggressively by his billing person. No progress was made until my insurance company called his billing person. So while the insurance company has told the doctor's billing person that I am not responsible for this bill and that the doctor will not be reimbursed, I encourage anyone who is under this doctor's care to ensure that he gets the required approval from insurance companies before he does a procedure.
