I was wheeled into Straub Hospital after being medevac'ed from Kauai after suffering a heart attack while kayaking. Didn't know it at the time, but I was in the hands of one of the most talented cardiologists in the state. Dr. Kai explained my situation to me and addressed all my concerns, many of which were, in retrospect, silly and uninformed.
Dr. Kai performed an angioplasty and placement of a stent. The following morning his team explained how the operation went and detailed the medications, diet, and lifestyle changes I'd need to adhere to - to avoid a repeat performance. Although it was Saturday, Dr. Kai stopped by armed with b&w printouts from the angiograms, before and after the angioplasty. He was patient and friendly and took the time to answer my questions. He apologized for not providing a DVD of the operation (his computer was malfunctioning) but sent it to our home in Los Angeles a week later.
24-hours after first being admitted into the ER in Kauai, I was released from Straub Honolulu. My wife and I had 6 hours to kill before our flight back to Los Angeles (from our dream Hawaii vacation!) so we took a cab to our hotel then walked a mile to a movie theater to see "Bridesmaids".
The insertion point for the angioplasty was a tiny hole by my crotch that healed within a day or two.
I consider myself the luckiest fellow on the planet to have gone "under the blade" of Dr. Wesley Kai.
