I have a science/engineering background and I understand the proper methods used to establish objective conclusions. I visited Dr. Sofman only once for a second opinion on a biopsy of a moderate-severe abnormal nevus I had excised by my dermatologist, Dr. X. When I met Dr. Sofman, the very first question he asked me was what Dr. X had concluded and recommended. I was speechless. By asking this question, Dr. Sofman immediately sought to relieve himself of the responsibility to make an independent judgment. To make matters worse, Dr. Sofman also had access to the report written by the pathology lab Dr. X is contracted with. Before making my appointment, I specifically requested that only my biopsy slides be made available so Dr. Sofman’s pathology lab can make an independent analysis. Dr. Sofman’s nonchalant attitude and access to previous reports rendered the second opinion useless. When I brought up my concerns on having a re-excision based on my research, Dr. Sofman was quick to silence me and began to lecture me (without providing justification) on the futility of self-education/research on medical issues using the internet- regardless of the site’s credentials. As you read my review, you are acknowledging that the internet is a limitless resource for both valid and invalid information.
After establishing his firm position that the nevus must be re-excised, Dr. Sofman began his casual yet pressing offer to perform the operation right there and now. When I asked him at what margin he would re-excise, he stated .5cm. When I informed him that other professionals had recommended a .1 to .2 cm margin, he quickly and unworriedly accepted (without documentation) in order to please me and said he can do it at the smaller margin. As we further discussed the procedure, he often repeated that the procedure is “no big deal” as opposed to thoroughly addressing my concerns on the medically necessary minimum margin and scars/aesthetics. Dr. Sofman should be working in the field of marketing, not medicine.
Without a doubt, my procedure is a “no big deal” for dermatologists when compared to the more complex and imminently life threatening conditions they treat on any given day. For a patient who is considering to be cut open by a total stranger however, the perspective is completely different. I recommend you to avoid this Doctor. You might be at risk of receiving below average treatment in addition to wasting your time and money.

I was very uncomfortable with they way in which he handles his billing. At time of appointment, he began to treat areas in which I didn't plan to treat. He told me that the cost would be minimal. I then got a bill for $120. I then reminded the physican regarding his statement. He responded by telling me that $120 is not that much money. Maybe in his world that is the case, but for most people, that is a significant amount of money. It takes them forever to get back to me. I never get my questions answered within a reasonable time period. Just a warning, they do not adhere to the customer is always right policy no matter what the situation is. They never listen to customers complaints and argue with them instead of trying to correct the situation. That's just bad business.
