Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • ½ cup margarine

  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans beef consommé

  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans beef broth

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 cup white wine

  • 8 ounces thinly sliced Swiss cheese

  • 12 slices of French bread

Directions

  • In a large pot over medium heat, sauté onions in margarine for about five minutes or until tender.

  • Add the consommé, broth, water, and wine, and cook on low heat for 40 minutes.

  • Preheat an oven to 300 degrees F.

  • Place one slice of Swiss cheese in the bottom of individual ovenproof bowls. Layer a slice of bread on top of each slice, then ladle in the hot soup. Top with another slice of bread and then Swiss cheese.

  • Place the bowls in the oven and bake until the cheese is completely melted.

  • Serve hot.
