With the push to live healthy reaching a frenetic pitch — get-slim-quick diets, supplements and various meal plans — many people looking to change their habits may not know where to turn or how to start on those goals.\n\nFor Rhonda Maguire of Louisville, the process began with a little Internet research.\n\nNineteen years ago, Maguire had her wisdom teeth removed around the time her daughter became sick with Strep-throat. In caring for her daughter, her throat became severely infected via the wounds in her mouth.\n\nThe resulting infection and closing of her throat required Maguire to receive a tracheotomy, which left her with some paralysis and a dependency on prescription allergy medications.\n\nThe allergy meds mitigated any kind of drainage down Maguire’s throat, which can block her trachea and her breathing.\n\nBut, because she did not want to be dependent on unnatural medicines, Maguire began looking for alternative health solutions.\n\nWhat she found was GeneLink — a company that performs DNA testing and creates supplements based on DNA test results.\n\nAlthough traditionally DNA testing has been wildly expensive — sometimes up to $350,000 for a full genetic run-down — the test only covers 12 small “snips,” as Maguire calls them, and can be completed for less than $200.\n\nIdeally, the goal is to analyze these 12 DNA snips, which Maguire said doctors have isolated as causing health problems that have been inherited and are often much more difficult for some people to overcome.\n\nThe more Maguire heard about the emerging biotechnological company, the more interested she became and decided it was a door she wanted to open.\n\nMaguire then signed on as a company representative, under the network-marketing business model, where someone can use the service as a customer, or can become as associate.\n\n“It’s a way to be a customer and have a home-based business,” Maguire said.\n\nSo, about three weeks ago, Maguire signed up as an associate, set up GeneWize Life Sciences in her home, and sent off for her DNA test kit. The kit includes two polyester swabs, with which she used to swab the inside of her cheek.\n\nThough historically, DNA tests have required blood tests and several months of testing to get results, new technologies have emerged that test cheek cells and can have results back in just a few weeks.\n\nOnce that’s complete, the test is sent back to GeneLink. Within just a few weeks, the company sends back a full assessment of the 12 snips, as well as supplements to help mitigate any problems discovered from the test.\n\nMaguire said a few weeks ago, during a doctor’s office visit, she was informed her cholesterol was a problem.\n\nWhen she received her test results and supplements back recently, the assessment identified the same problem and included a supplement to help handle the issue.\n\nMaguire has even signed on a couple of friends to help her in her new venture, Jodeen Rubendall-Porter and Janet Madden.\n\nBoth are enthusiastic about the business, and the product.\n\n“Some people struggle with what they’ve genetically inherited,” Rubendall-Porter said. “The custom supplements help mitigate the effects on the physical body because of that.\n\n“The business sells itself; it’s really a no-brainer,” Rubendall-Porter added.\n\nSo far, Maguire said she has talked to many people about the system and has received a lot of interest and inquiries on how to sign up, including a nurse, she said.\n\n“It’s amazing how many people are open to this,” Maguire said.\n\nTo learn more about Maguire or GeneWize, visit <url removed> more information, e-mail rhondamaguire@gmail.com rhondamaguire@gmail.com.
