Education and Training: To become an anesthesiologist, 4 years of undergraduate study are required. Then, the anesthesiologist must complete 4 years of medical school and an additional 3 to 8 years of residency. Once this schooling and training is finished, the student can become a certified anesthesiologist by passing the American Board of Anesthesiologists Certification Exam (re-certification exam must be passed every 10 years) and the state licensing exam.
