After graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago and then achieving his MD at St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr Avery served in the United States Army from May 1990 to June 2002. He served his residency in internal medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington before completing a fellowship in hematology-oncology at Washington, D.C.'s Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A frequent lecturer and teacher with residency programs, Dr Avery is an associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a member of the clinical adjunct faculty of Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine.
