About
Rachel Slotcavage
Rachel L. Slotcavage, M.D., M.Ed., FACS, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon at the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. She specializes in the surgical treatment of benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid conditions, adrenal gland tumors, and neuroendocrine pancreas disorders. Dr. Slotcavage performs such procedures as comprehensive neck ultrasound, thyroid biopsy, total and partial thyroidectomies, neck dissections for metastatic or recurrent disease, parathyroid exploration, remedial thyroid and parathyroid surgery, laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomies, and laparoscopic partial pancreatectomy or tumor enucleation. Many of the surgeries Dr. Slotcavage perform require a level of precision not commonly seen in other surgical procedures. Dr. Slotcavage is an affiliate associate professor at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. Prior to joining Baptist Health, she was an endocrine surgeon and associate professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology and the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. Dr. Slotcavage earned her medical degree at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and remained at the University of Pennsylvania to complete a postdoctoral research fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology. She performed her general surgery internship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Pennsylvania and completed residency at Cooper University Hospital in New Jersey, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Slotcavage found her passion in endocrine surgery and completed her subspecialty fellowship training in this area at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Slotcavage has published her research, including involvement with clinical trials, in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented clinical and educationally focused work at national and international symposiums. She also contributes to the scientific community by serving as an editor and reviewer for several medical journals and a member and committee member of several professional organizations. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Patient education is important to Dr. Slotcavage. To enable her patients to make the best decisions about their healthcare, she spends time helping them understand the disease process and the rationale behind the recommended therapy. This helps patients feel more empowered and better able to cope with uncomfortable symptoms or frequent appointments for treatment. Dr. Slotcavage is an avid cyclist, participating in road, cyclocross, and gravel cycling. She is also an avid baseball fan. She roots for her hometown Phillies and is on a quest to visit all 30 Major League Baseball parks. When she has spare time, Dr. Slotcavage enjoys reading and building Legos.
