Ram Nirula, MD, MPH, FACS, is a nationally recognized trauma surgeon, surgical intensivist, and academic leader in general surgery. He currently serves as the Division Chief of General Surgery and the Dr. D. Rees and Eleanor T. Jensen Presidential Endowed Chair of Surgery at the University of Utah, where he is also a Professor of Surgery with Tenure. Clinical Expertise Dr. Nirula provides advanced care in trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. In addition to providing acute and emergency care, Dr. Nirula’s clinical expertise includes: Gallbladder surgery Lipoma surgery Femoral Inguinal Epigastric Umbilical Incisional Ventral Abdominal Hernia surgery Education and Training Dr. Nirula earned his Bachelor of Arts in Life Sciences from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, and his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. He completed his general surgery residency at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California before pursuing advanced training in Surgical Critical Care at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center, where he also earned a Master of Public Health (MPH). He is board-certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, and is a certified Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor, with additional certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association. Research and Academic Contributions An accomplished academic surgeon, Dr. Nirula’s research is focused on advancing trauma care and improving patient outcomes. His areas of study include: Traumatic brain injury (TBI): optimizing treatment strategies and improving adherence to evidence-based guidelines. Thoracic trauma: pioneering studies in rib fracture stabilization and operative chest wall reconstruction. Multi-institutional trauma research: leadership in national trials through the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), where he served as Chair of the Multi-Institutional Trials Committee (MITC). Injury prevention and systems of care: analyzing motor vehicle crash data to inform auto safety design and emergency response. Renal and abdominal trauma: collaborative multi-center studies to guide best practices. His research has been published in leading journals including JAMA, JAMA Surgery, and the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. He has also contributed to the development of trauma education innovations, including simulation and virtual reality training for surgical teams. Leadership and Professional Service Since joining the University of Utah in 2007, Dr. Nirula has advanced through the academic ranks, achieving the role of Professor of Surgery in 2017. He currently directs both the University of Utah Level I Trauma Center and its Trauma Research Program, leading efforts to improve trauma systems locally and nationally. Dr. Nirula has held leadership positions with major professional organizations, including: Chair, Multi-Institutional Trials Committee, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Editorial and educational roles with the American College of Surgeons and other surgical organizations Active member of the Western Trauma Association and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Patient-Centered Care Dedicated to advancing both immediate trauma outcomes and long-term recovery, Dr. Nirula works closely with patients, families, and multidisciplinary care teams. He is committed to evidence-based, compassionate, and innovative care that helps patients return to meaningful quality of life following serious injury.
