Patrick C. Cartwright
Patrick C. Cartwright, MD, is a board-certified pediatric urologist with expertise in the full spectrum of urologic care and surgery for children. His clinical focus includes the treatment of disorders affecting the kidneys, ureters, bladder, adrenal glands, reproductive organs, and genitalia in both male and female children. Dr. Cartwright’s surgical innovation and commitment to safety have established him as a national leader in pediatric urology. Conditions Treated At Primary Children’s Hospital, Dr. Cartwright provides expert care for a wide range of pediatric urologic conditions, including: Genitourinary trauma Urinary tract infections (UTIs) Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) Hydronephrosis and ureteropelvic junction (UPJ)/ureterovesical junction (UVJ) obstruction Prenatal/fetal urologic anomalies (e.g., prenatal hydronephrosis) Kidney and urinary tract tumors (e.g., Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma) Neurogenic bladder (due to spina bifida or injury) Pediatric urinary incontinence Hernias, undescended testicles, and hydroceles Hypospadias, epispadias, and penile curvature (chordee) Bladder and cloacal exstrophy Kidney stones and abnormal urination Meatal stenosis and circumcision Disorders of sexual development (e.g., congenital adrenal hyperplasia) Collaborative Multidisciplinary Care He is an integral member of the Spina Bifida Clinic at Primary Children’s, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver specialized care. In addition to his main practice location, Dr. Cartwright also sees patients at Primary Children’s Lehi campus and in the pediatric urology outreach clinic in Idaho Falls. Education and Training Dr. Cartwright earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, completed his residency in general surgery and urology at the University of Utah, and pursued advanced fellowship training in pediatric urology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He returned to Utah to join the faculty at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital, where he has built a longstanding and respected career in pediatric urology. Leadership, Research, and Innovation Dr. Cartwright has held several national leadership roles, including former president of the Society for Pediatric Urology and the AUA-Western Section. He also serves on the Children's Surgery Verification Committee for the American College of Surgeons and is a peer reviewer for multiple medical journals. A prolific author, he has published extensively in the field, contributing to numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He has pioneered multiple surgical techniques currently used in pediatric urology and remains committed to advancing safety and quality in pediatric surgical care.
