About Dr. Cheng
A career in medicine was a natural choice for Paul W. Cheng, MD, who has plenty of physicians in his family. “My father, being a physician, had a great influence on me,” Dr. Cheng says. “His positive impact on people’s lives, which I saw regularly growing up, really steered my decision to be a physician.
Dr. Cheng earned his B.A. in biology at Washington University (St. Louis, MO) and his M.D. at Northwestern University School of Medicine (Chicago). A residency in internal medicine was completed at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center (Chicago), where he was named Outstanding Resident Teacher three consecutive years, and he did his chief residency at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center (Chicago). A fellowship in cardiovascular disease was completed at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Iowa City).
Always interested in learning about the heart, Dr. Cheng also liked that in the specialty of cardiology, he could make a positive impact on a patient relatively quickly. “There are many treatments available which is a plus; however, I wish there were a lot more cures for what cardiologists deal with,” he says.
In his approach to treatment, he feels prevention is a very important element in the process. He works quickly to find the necessary information to help people with their problems. Listening is an important part of his approach to care. “The majority of the time, what patients tell me helps in diagnosing their issue,” he says, adding, “People come to have problems helped, and being able to interpret what those problems are is at the core of patient visits."
