Joao de Quevedo
João L. de Quevedo, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist with more than 20 years of experience in helping patients diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression. As a clinician, he uses the latest advancements in interventional psychiatry to help patients manage complex diagnoses and provide them with personalized treatment strategies.
His clinical areas of interest are treatment-resistant depression, major depressive disorder, bipolar depression, interventional psychiatry, and brain stimulation.
Dr. de Quevedo has been involved in research since 1994, while still in medical school. He was a research fellow working with Ivan A. Izquierdo, PhD, one of Brazil’s most important scientists. In 1996, he published his first research paper focused on the neurobiology of learning and memory, an area to which he devoted himself until the completion of his doctorate.
He gradually shifted his research interest to the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders, particularly major depression and bipolar disorder. As a researcher, he has been working to develop experimental treatments that can be used in the near future for patients.
Dr. de Quevedo graduated from medical school in 1998 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. He then completed his psychiatry residency training in 2000, followed by a fellowship in psychopharmacology and a PhD in Biological Sciences (Biochemistry) in 2002 from the same institution.
Dr. de Quevedo moved to the U.S. in 2014, after serving as faculty for 15 years at the University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNESC) in Brazil, where he held several positions including dean of the medical school. He is currently a professor at the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He is also the vice-chair for faculty development and outreach, the director of the Translational Psychiatry Program, and the director of the Treatment-Resistant Depression Program. Concurrently, he is a professor at the Neuroscience Graduate Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and an adjunct professor in the graduate program in Health Sciences, at his former Brazilian university, The University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNESC). Dr. de Quevedo also serves as editor-in-chief for the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry and associate editor for Translational Psychiatry.
