Michelle “Shelley” Scerbo, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in bariatric and foregut surgery. This includes the treatment of obesity and obesity-related health conditions, as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease. She treats teenagers, adults, and older adults.
Dr. Scerbo focuses on patient-centered care, shared decision-making, and opioid-sparing strategies for pain control when it comes to guiding her patients through their surgical journey. She also strongly values improving fairness in health care and incorporating new technologies.
Her areas of specialty care include surgery of the esophagus and stomach (reflux/heartburn, ulcer disease, hiatal hernias, achalasia, and weight loss procedures for obesity, including revisional bariatric surgery). Her practice also includes surgery of the abdominal wall and hernia surgery (umbilical/ventral/femoral/inguinal hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction), as well as surgery for diseases of the gallbladder, small intestine, appendix, and colon. Whenever possible, Dr. Scerbo opts for minimally invasive techniques to reduce incision size and postoperative pain, and improve recovery time. She additionally performs upper endoscopies and colonoscopies.
She is an assistant professor of surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She is also the trauma medical director at Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital. Her experience includes a residency in general surgery, and a fellowship in minimally invasive, advanced gastrointestinal, and bariatric surgery. During that time, she received formal training in robotic surgery and surgical endoscopy. She received a Master of Science in health informatics during her training. In addition to her clinical practice, she uses her expertise to ensure that electronic medical records contribute to the efficient and safe delivery of patient care. This includes serving as the physician editor for the electronic surgical order sets for the Memorial Hermann Hospital System.
Her professional memberships include American College of Surgeons, American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Medical Informatics Association, and Surgical Infection Society. She serves on the Informatics Committee of the Surgical Infection Society.
In her spare time, Dr. Scerbo likes spending time with her husband and three children, attending sporting events, Pilates, and contributing to the growth of the Cypress, Texas community.
