Dr Mayer earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. He completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in critical care neurology at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Neurology and built one of the nation's leading academic neurocritical care programs.
