Makondo Shimukowa, MD received her medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine, Portsmouth Dominica West Indies. She then completed her internship, residency, and fellowship in infectious disease at Suny Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Dr. Shimukowa’s clinical interest include HIV, hepatitis-C and B, PrEP, STIs (including acyclovir resistant HSV ulcers). She also treats diabetic foot infections, skin, joint and bone infections, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, tick-borne illnesses, and travel medicine.
Dr. Shimukowa has held the rank of clinical assistant professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and medical director for Ryan White HIV Clinic in Dunn, N.C.
Dr. Shimukowa received the Dr. Evelyn Schmidt Outstanding Service Award from North Carolina Community Health Center Association and the Lynda Bell Compassionate Care Patient Award from the North Carolina Community AIDS Fund. She is a member of the AMA Infectious Disease Society of America and International AIDS Society USA. She provides both inpatient and outpatient infectious disease care.
