About Dr. Grady
When Anna W. Grady, MD, met several women who were making a difference by helping patients, she was inspired to pursue medicine. “I decided to start on a path to become a doctor because of role models that I had through my church,” she says.
Dr. Grady noted a few distant relatives who are physicians, but instead considers herself a descendent of farmers and pastors. “Both sides of my family have deep roots in farming, and I take a lot of joy from gardening even though my success rate is not very high!” she says.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, at Manchester University, North Manchester, IN, where she majored in Biology-Chemistry, and minored in Peace Studies and Spanish. She then went to Indiana University School of Medicine where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree.
Dr. Grady’s specialty is women’s health. “I help deliver babies, whether vaginally or Cesarean delivery, and provide women’s health throughout the lifespan,” she says. “I have a background in family medicine and while I will not be caring for children or the whole family, I will bring knowledge about the whole person to the care I provide for women.”
As she works with patients, Dr. Grady uses her training to make sense of the challenge her patients face and helps them map a path forward. “I hope that patients learn that their healthcare team deeply cares for them and is working to advocate for their best interests,” she says.
While she provides a service and support to her patients, she expresses that she feels incredibly blessed that her patients share vulnerable moments and decisions with her. “I have been amazed by how bravely my patients have faced incredibly challenging times and how appreciative patients are for whatever information I can offer, even when facing situations that no one would ever choose,” Dr. Grady says.
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My mother continues to inspire me to work hard and take on challenges in all aspects of life.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? As a preschooler, I was paid $0.25 to help my dad stuff envelopes for our church! My first real job was as a church organist and what I remember the most was learning how to confidently perform in public even when I was very nervous.
What is your favorite food? Movie? My favorite food is guacamole – I still lick the bowl clean! My favorite movie is My Neighbor Totoro – it is an animated movie starring two young sisters. It inspires me to help my family develop deep and strong bonds.
What was your favorite subject in school growing up? My favorite school subject has always been math, because unlike the ambiguity and uncertainty of the rest of life’s challenges, math always has a right answer!
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? I would love to spend time with Desmond Tutu – he has seen some of the worst of what people will inflict on other people yet he has faith in God and humanity’s love.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I love to learn about native plants and grow both food and flowers to share with my family and neighborhood. I have also recently started both crocheting and knitting and love making things that bring beauty to our home.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I once ate a housefly on a dare.
