About Su Choo Chang
It was during high school that Su Choo Chang, MD, decided to become a doctor. Now she spends her time caring for babies, kids and teenagers under 18 years old. “I love the interactions with young kids, enjoy seeing them growing up, achieving new milestones and learning new skills over time,” she says.
Her education and training began at the International Medical University, Malaysia, where she earned an Advanced Diploma of Medical Science. She then attended University of Western Ontario Faculty of Medicine, London, Ontario, Canada, and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree. Her international education continued when she completed her internship and residency in Richmond, VA, at Pediatrics in Virginia Commonwealth University Health System – Medical College of Virginia. She then further pursued fellowship training in Pediatrics Hematology – Oncology and Neuro-oncology at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR.
Dr. Chang’s philosophy is to treat patients with respect and compassion and be thoughtful about their needs. She says patients have taught her to be more understanding, have patience and to be inclusive. “Every patient’s experience and challenges are different and unique in their own way,” she says.
Dr. Chang previously practiced as a general pediatrician at a FQHC facility in South Bend for more than 13 years. She has vast experiences in taking care of premature babies, children with chronic health conditions, depression, anxiety, ADHD, adolescent health, transgender related issues, foster children and more. She also enjoys precepting pre-med students and NP students throughout her career.
She hopes patients learn from her to be respectful of themselves and to others. She strives to have doctor and patient working together to achieve good health and wellness. “Teamwork makes the dreams work,” Dr. Chang says.
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My parents. They are always hardworking and taught me to be responsible and show empathy to everyone around.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I volunteered at a retirement home. I realize that we will grow old one day and that a healthy body and positive mindset are important when we go through life.
