Dr. Tavya Benjamin, MD, is the Chief of Urology at Glen Cove Hospital and Assistant Professor at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Her specialization lies in the comprehensive care and treatment of urological conditions, with a dedicated focus on prostate cancer screening and diagnosis as well as focal therapy for prostate cancer.A strong advocate for advanced and efficient diagnostic methods, Dr. Benjamin utilizes MRI-ultrasound fusion technology to enhance cancer detection rates. She also employs a transperineal approach to prostate biopsy, which significantly minimizes the risk of post-biopsy infection. Dr. Benjamin participates in Northwell Health's Rapid Diagnostic Pathway, a streamlined process that ensures patients with elevated PSA levels are evaluated quickly and efficiently. This system decreases the time to MRI and biopsy, thereby reducing stress and worry for patients and allowing for more immediate treatment intervention. Recognizing the delicate balance between effective cancer treatment and the preservation of patient quality of life, Dr. Benjamin has honed her expertise in focal therapy for prostate cancer, aiming to reduce treatment-associated side effects such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Beyond prostate cancer, Dr. Benjamin is well-versed in general urology conditions such as kidney stones, difficulty or too frequent urinating, and blood in the urine. Dr. Benjamin's decision to practice medicine was deeply influenced by her passion for improving others' health and wellbeing. "Urology provides a compelling mix of surgical and medical care," Dr. Benjamin reflects, "and this, along with the opportunity to establish lasting patient relationships, was a deciding factor for me." After receiving her medical degree from the University of Central Florida, College of Medicine, she pursued her residency at The Smith Institute for Urology - Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Further expanding her expertise, Dr. Benjamin completed a fellowship in Interventional Urology at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health, focusing on prostate artery embolization and varicocele embolization.
