Dr. James Curtis is an Assistant Professor of Speech-Language Pathology and a clinical researcher within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and Weill Cornell Medical College. He is a New York State licensed speech-language pathologist and board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders with expertise in the evaluation and treatment of voice, cough, and swallowing disorders across a diverse range of medical etiologies.Clinically, Dr. Curtis worked as a speech-language pathologist at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center’s Voice & Swallowing Center and the Head & Neck Cancer Center where he specialized in the care of the professional and performing voice users, laryngeal hypersensitivity disorders, and dysphagia management in people with neurologic and oncologic disease. Academically, Dr. Curtis earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, master’s degrees from New York University and Columbia University, and a doctoral (PhD) degree from Columbia University. Dr. Curtiswas the first speech-language pathology researcher to be awarded the prestigious Clinical Research Training Scholarship in Parkinson’s Disease from the American Academy of Neurology. This training scholarship was used to fund his postdoctoral research fellowship at Columbia University which aimed at developing and researching novel approaches to improve swallowing in people with Parkinson’s disease and dysphagia.Dr. Curtis is the director of the Aerodigestive Innovations Research Lab (AIR) at Weill Cornell Medicine. AIR's mission is to improve the health and quality-of-life of people with voice and swallowing disorders through scientific discovery, clinical innovation, collaboration, and educational outreach.
