About Sara Szynal

Becoming a nurse is one of the things that Sara Szynal is proudest of in her life. She does not take the responsibility of caring for her patients lightly. “One of my favorite quotes by Florence Nightingale is, ‘Let us never consider ourselves finished, nurses. We must be learning all of our lives,’” she says.

Sara strives to never be complacent and to be continually learning and providing the most up to date and evidence-based medicine to patients. “I always knew growing up that I wanted to be a nurse. I received my CNA license right out of high school and fell in love with nursing. Nursing combines my passion for medicine and my passion to serve others and care for them,” she says.

Her path to cardiology came after working as a cardiac technician at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. “I am fascinated with the heart and how it functions, especially the electrophysiology of it,” Sara says.

No matter where she has worked, Sara knows the importance of listening to patients. She believes the diagnosis is always in their story. And beyond the diagnosis she serves her patients by listening to their burdens and sorrows and treating them with grace and understanding. A favorite quote of Mahatma Gandhi guides her: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

“My patients have taught me over the years that they are not just a diagnosis but a human being that wants to be heard,” she says.

In her own words…

Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life?  My mother. She is the most caring, giving and hard working woman I know and I strive to be the best parent and human being that she is.

What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it?  My first job after high school was as a CNA at a local hospital.

What is your favorite food?  Pizza

What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up?  My worst subject was always history. My favorite was chemistry and genetics.

In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about?  I am passionate about my faith in God. I always depend on God’s grace and understanding. Nothing is ever easy in life but I know that there is always a purpose and I find peace in knowing that.

What are your hobbies, interests?  I enjoy reading, traveling and spending time with my family.

What is most people don’t know about you?  One thing that I think most people don’t know about me is that I lived in Israel for a few years and I had my first son, Elian, while I was over there. I love to travel and experience different cultures and I hope that I am fortunate enough to do so in the future, too.
