Dr Allen-Sharpley’s research focuses on the development of patient-specific in vitro models of pediatric neuromuscular diseases to investigate novel therapeutic strategies. Reprogramming patient-derived stem cells into various tissue-specific models representative of the patient’s disease state (i.e. muscle, neuromuscular junctions, nerve cells, motor neurons) allows us to study disease processes, apply and develop new potential treatments. With a focus on personalized medicine, another area of research is in exploring the potential of autologous cell-based therapies for muscle disease.
