About Shelby Shelby Faltynski has wanted to pursue a career in medicine for as long as she can remember. “As a little girl, I would provide care to my sick and injured dolls,” she recalls. Today, she brings that caring and compassionate nature to her patients as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
She considers it a privilege to partner with women in their health and well-being. “I get to educate and counsel them about how to pursue wellness and prevent disease,” she says. “I also have the opportunity to provide holistic care to my patients who are sick or hurting.”
Shelby’s philosophy is rooted in the relational aspect of patient care. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” she explains. “Staying up-to-date with evidence-based practice is extremely important but getting to know my patients is equally critical. I can prescribe a medication, but it will not be helpful if she doesn’t understand why she is taking it and what it does. A trusting relationship between the patient and the clinician is vital.”
In her own words Who was the most influential person/role model in your life? My mom has been one of the most influential people in my life. As a single mother, she worked two and sometimes three jobs to provide for our family. Somehow, she still managed to make it to every one of my soccer games and was the loudest parent on the sidelines. Her sacrificial commitment to our family and loving encouragement has truly been such a gift to me.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember most about it? I worked at Dairy Queen in high school, and I still enjoy making soft-serve ice cream cones with the swirl on top!
What is your favorite food? Movie? I love ice cream, and my favorite movies are romantic comedies.
What were your best/worst subjects in school growing up? I enjoyed math and science, but English was not my favorite.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased), who would it be and why? I would want to have dinner with Jesus Christ. I would love to learn firsthand about his life and eternity.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I am passionate about my relationship with the Lord. It is my desire to live my life for Him. My husband and daughter are also incredibly important to me. In addition to serving and spending time with them, I enjoy all things health and fitness. I love running and strength training.
Do you have pets? We have a lab mix named Lucy and a black cat our daughter named Cuddlecakes.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I ran track and played soccer for Bethel College where I studied nursing.
